English
P. chichipe is native to Mexico Central and Mexico Southwest where the plant grows on alluvial limestone spread up to 2300 m of altitude.
It is a column-shaped plant with a green branched stem with gray spines, that become darker over time. Normally, the maximum height is of 5 meters.
The nocturnal flowering occurs in the spring / summer period, blooming with cream-white or yellow-green flowers, from which spherical red berries are born.
Care
- It likes an exposure to full sun in rather airy locations.
- It prefers rather mild temperatures, however it still survives even at temperatures close to freezing if the soil is dry.
- Water regularly on a weekly basis in spring-summer, always making sure that the soil is always dry between one watering and another one, avoiding stagnation of water. During the winter period, suspend watering.
- A soil suitable for cacti is an optimal solution, even better if further mixed with pumice.
- They do not need frequent fertilization, it is sufficient to dilute the fertilizer with watering once a year.
Extra
The Polaskia name is a tribute to Charles Polaski, an American cactus lover from Oklahoma.
