Philodendron ‘Summer Glory’ brings a changing palette into your home. New leaves unfurl in warm bronze and reddish tones, with pink veins that gradually fade as the green deepens. Their broad, heart-shaped surfaces and soft sheen give the foliage a rich, almost sculptural presence. Each new leaf adds another shade beside the mature, dark-green leaves, creating a composition with depth and movement. This is a philodendron that draws the eye and brings warmth to a room, with colour that continues to evolve as the plant grows.

Light and position

Choose a bright spot near a window, using a sheer curtain if strong sunlight reaches the leaves. Insufficient light slows growth and may lead to smaller leaves. Avoid strong midday sun, which can scorch the foliage.

Watering well

Check the potting mix with your finger and allow the top 2–3 cm to dry without letting the entire pot dry out. Water evenly, allow excess water to escape through the drainage holes and empty the outer pot. Watering is usually less frequent in winter.

Air humidity

It usually adapts to average household humidity. A humidifier can help if the air is very dry. Keep it away from radiators, allow gentle air circulation and never pull at new leaves to make them open.

Temperature

Aim for steady warmth, around 18–28°C, and protect the plant as temperatures approach 15°C. Avoid contact with cold window glass and direct draughts from air conditioning.

Potting mix

Use an airy aroid mix that drains freely while retaining some moisture. Ingredients such as bark and perlite help maintain air spaces around the roots. The pot must have drainage holes.

Feeding and repotting

While the plant is producing new leaves, use a complete fertiliser for foliage plants at the rate given on the label, applied to lightly moist potting mix. Reduce or pause feeding when growth slows. Repot when the roots fill the pot, choosing the next pot size up.

A cross made in Florida

The story of ‘Summer Glory’ began in August 2016 in Florida City. LariAnn Garner made the cross to select a philodendron with a distinctive appearance and good performance in cultivation.

The two parents

An unnamed Philodendron hybrid was used as the female parent, with a Philodendron gloriosum as the male parent. The plant selected from their offspring became ‘Summer Glory’, with its characteristic bronze new leaves.

From selection to production

The first recorded propagation by tissue culture took place in August 2020 in Apopka, Florida. The cultivar received US plant patent USPP34,347 on 14 June 2022.

One leaf, successive colours

The transition from reddish bronze to green takes place within the same leaf as it matures. Leaves of different ages can therefore display different tones on the same plant at the same time.

The red sheath is a cataphyll

A new leaf is protected by an elongated reddish cataphyll: a modified leaf with a different role from the broad green foliage. The botanical description records two distinctive ridges along its length.

A main stem and basal shoots

‘Summer Glory’ develops a prominent main stem and can produce side shoots from the base. This explains how it develops full foliage that spreads as the plant grows.

A hybrid continued as a clone

The cross produced different offspring, from which one individual plant was selected. Propagation from meristem tissue continues that selection rather than creating a new combination of parents each time.

Practical answers about growth and the most common signs to watch for.

01 Why does a bronze new leaf turn green?

This is the normal development of ‘Summer Glory’. As the leaf matures, bronze and reddish tones give way to deep green. There is no need to place it in strong sun or add fertiliser to preserve its original colour.

02 What do several yellow leaves mean?

An old lower leaf may simply be ageing. If several turn yellow together, first check whether the mix stays constantly wet, whether the pot drains properly and whether the plant has enough light. Avoid automatically adding water or fertiliser before finding the cause.

03 Does it need a moss pole?

‘Summer Glory’ grows upright to arching, with foliage that opens outwards. Its main needs are space and a stable pot. If a larger stem begins to lean, you can support it loosely with a simple stake, leaving the leaf stalks free.

04 Why is a new leaf struggling to open?

Very dry air, dehydration or cold can make unfurling difficult. Check moisture in the potting mix, keep conditions steady and give it time. Do not pull the soft leaf out of its sheath, as it tears easily.

05 When does it need a larger pot?

When the roots have filled the pot and the mix dries noticeably faster than before. Check the roots before repotting and choose the next pot size up. An oversized pot holds more water than the plant can use.

06 Is it safe for pets and children?

It must not be chewed or eaten. The tissues contain insoluble calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause severe irritation in the mouth. Keep it out of reach; if it is swallowed or symptoms occur, contact a vet or doctor as appropriate.
