Light for mature morphology

Provide bright indirect light near an east-facing or filtered south-facing window. Very low light reduces new-leaf size, while hot direct sun can scorch the blades.

Water with a depth check

Water when the top 2–4 cm dries, wetting the entire root ball. Empty the saucer or outer pot and do not keep roots permanently saturated.

Monstera adansonii is an accepted species in the Araceae. ‘Monkey Leaf’ is widely used as a cultivated trade designation and is not a separate accepted species.

Native range and growth habit

The species is native to tropical America, where it climbs vegetation in wet tropical forests.

‘Monkey Leaf’, not the rare Monstera obliqua

European trade has often linked ‘Monkey Leaf’ incorrectly with Monstera obliqua. The cultivated product corresponds to M. adansonii; true M. obliqua is far rarer and taxonomically distinct.

Fenestrations form within the blade

The characteristic holes are normal mature-blade morphology, not insect damage. Their pattern is influenced by age, light and support.

03 Can I shorten a long stem?
