Hoya latifolia ‘Rangsan’ stands out for its substantial leaves, where strong veins form a textured network across deep green blades. Silver splashes brighten the surface, sometimes as a fine dusting and sometimes as broader brushstrokes, giving each leaf its own character.

Light and position

Provide bright indirect light close to a window. A little gentle morning sun may be tolerated after gradual acclimatisation, but avoid sudden exposure. In a dark position, stems become sparse and flowering is less likely.

Watering well

Check the pot’s weight and moisture below the surface. Water thoroughly when much of the mix has dried, without leaving the plant dry for prolonged periods. Empty the outer planter and adjust the interval to light and warmth.

Air humidity

Moderate household humidity can be sufficient, while steadier humidity helps developing growth. Provide gentle airflow and avoid both drying heat and a permanently enclosed, damp corner.

Temperature

Choose a consistently warm setting, around 18–27°C. Protect against cold draughts and prolonged chills, particularly when the mix is wet. Keep leaves away from cold window glass in winter.

Potting mix

Sybasoil Hoya Premium Mix provides the coarse, airy structure suited to epiphytic hoyas. Use a pot with drainage holes. Avoid dense compost that stays wet for many days.

Feeding and repotting

Feed lightly during active growth, following the fertiliser label. The recommended mix already contains nutrients, which should be taken into account after repotting. Move up just one pot size when roots fill the container, without unnecessary frequent repotting.

The natural history of Hoya latifolia begins in wet tropical forests from Myanmar to western Malesia. There it climbs and can root on trees or rocks, making use of supports beyond the forest floor.

One species, more than one name

The name Hoya latifolia was published in 1837. Hoya macrophylla, still familiar in many collections, is now treated as a synonym of the same species.

‘Rangsan’ sits within this botanical story, recognised for textured foliage and silver splashes. The selection’s precise origin and the story behind its name are undocumented; its distinctive leaf appearance remains its identifying feature in cultivation.

An epiphyte is not a parasite

A hoya uses a tree for support without connecting to its vascular system to draw food. Its own roots absorb water and nutrients from the material that gathers around them.

Leaves with a water reserve

The fleshy, leathery blades of hoyas store water. This structure helps an epiphyte bridge the intervals between wetting and drying in the small space where it roots.

A flower stalk with a future

An old hoya flower stalk can produce further clusters. When the flowers drop, the whole flowering structure is not necessarily exhausted, so a healthy stalk is left in place.

Seeds equipped for flight

The fruits of Hoya are follicles that split to release seeds with a silky tuft of hairs. This tuft increases air resistance and aids dispersal away from the parent plant.

01 Will every leaf have the same silver pattern?

No. The area and distribution of the silver splashes vary naturally. One greener leaf does not by itself show that the selection has changed.

02 Why is it growing a long stem without leaves?

A hoya may extend its stem before developing leaves. If it remains firm and continues growing, provide support. Check the light as well if new growth stays very sparse.

03 When will it flower?

Flowering depends on maturity, light and stable conditions. There is no fixed timetable for a young plant. Avoid abrupt changes of position while buds are forming.

04 Should I cut the stalk after the flowers fall?

Not if it is still healthy. It may flower again from the same peduncle. Remove only a section that has dried out completely.

05 What do wrinkled leaves mean?

Prolonged dryness is one possibility, but damaged roots can also limit water uptake. Check moisture in the mix first. If it is already wet, extra watering may make matters worse.

06 Can I keep it with pets?

Keep it out of reach if your pet chews plants. It is not intended for consumption and its milky sap may irritate. Wear gloves when pruning and wash off any sap that contacts your skin.
