Composition

A coarse, open composition that dries predictably

Bark, husk chips and perlite create stable air spaces, while the smaller coir base holds only the moisture the roots need.

The base of the mix

1.5 parts coco coir, 1 part worm castings, 1 part coconut husk chips, 2 parts orchid bark and 1 part perlite, with small amounts of activated carbon and lava gravel, plus organic nutrients.

1.5 parts coco coir: Holds controlled moisture without dominating the structure.
1 part worm castings: Adds bioactive organic matter and gradual nutrition.
1 part coconut husk chips: Opens the mix and resists compaction.
2 parts orchid bark: Supports epiphytic roots and creates large air channels.

Use it straight from the package in a pot with adequate drainage holes, without compressing the chunky structure around the roots.

01Remove loose old mix

Inspect the fleshy roots and remove only material that comes away easily.

02Add a thin base layer

Place a little Hoya Mix in the bottom and position the plant at the same depth.

03Fill without crushing the chunks

Fill around the roots and settle the mix by lightly tapping the pot.

04Water and let it drain

Wet the mix after repotting and do not leave water standing in the outer pot.

Let the upper layer dry

Water when the top 2–3 cm has dried. Hoya tolerates a little more drying than most aroids, but timing still depends on light and temperature.
