The name is often altered in trade to “ladysmithiensis”. The valid spelling refers to Ladismith in South Africa and was first published as Cotyledon ladismithiensis.

An accepted subspecies of C. tomentosa

Kew accepts Cotyledon tomentosa subsp. ladismithiensis. It is not a cultivar or artificial hybrid, but a naturally occurring taxonomic entity.

Native to the Cape

Its native range is in South Africa’s Cape Provinces, in subtropical seasonally dry conditions where rocky sites provide rapid drainage.
