What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Tradescantia Nanouk®

A pink cloud with marshmallow stripes 🍬

Family: Commelinaceae · Pot diameter: 7 cm

  • Cultivar ‘Nanouk’
  • Pink, green and cream stripes
  • Fleshy leaves
  • Easy rooting at nodes

Tradescantia Nanouk® resembles a painted cluster of fleshy leaves, with green, cream, pink and lilac running in parallel stripes and changing intensity with the angle of light. Short internodes keep the young crown full before stems begin to flow outwards. Its pastel contrasts have the softness of a watercolour, bringing a playful detail among other green plants.

As the stems lengthen, Tradescantia Nanouk® turns the rhythm of its small leaves into an airy pastel arrangement. From above, it resembles a colourful bouquet; from the side, its stripes trace soft curves beyond the pot. Beside white ceramics or the warm surface of wood, its pink becomes the little detail that brightens the whole corner.

What makes it special

‘Nanouk’ combines stable multicolour patterning, a thicker leaf texture and compact branching.

Watercolour stripes

Each blade repeats green, cream and pink in different proportions, so no view of the crown is exactly the same.

A clean fleshy surface

Thicker leaves give the stripes substance and retain a clean outline even as stems begin to trail.

Nodes that restart

Each healthy node can activate roots and lateral growth, making renewal of the pot especially direct.

Why you’ll love it: it brings pastel colour without relying on flowers and lets you renew the composition easily from its own nodes.

In your space

Where it looks its best

On a high shelf or in a hanging pot where the stems can fall freely and receive even light. A small turn every few weeks keeps the silhouette balanced.

Plant pairings

Plants that complement it

Choices with compatible light needs and contrasting textures keep the arrangement balanced.

  • Peperomia caperata ‘Rosso’ — dark textured leaves in a compact rosette.
  • Ceropegia woodii — silver hearts on a finer trailing line.
  • Fittonia albivenis — vivid venation and a low cushioned form.

Care at a glance

Light

Plentiful bright, filtered light for clear colour and compact growth. Protect it from harsh midday sun.

Water

When the upper third of the mix is dry. Water evenly, drain completely and do not keep the crown permanently wet.

Atmosphere

Average humidity, gentle airflow and roughly 18–27°C. Avoid cold draughts and prolonged drought.

Pets

The sap may irritate sensitive skin and chewing is not recommended. Keep it away from persistent pets.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, watering, humidity, substrate and nutrition in detail

Light and colour

Provide bright diffused light to keep pink, purple or dark areas clear. Very low intensity fades contrast, while harsh sun leaves dry scorch marks.

Watering the potting mix

Water the root zone rather than repeatedly wetting the dense leaf bases. Let the upper portion dry between waterings without pushing the roots into prolonged wilt.

Tip pruning

Cut above a healthy node during active growth to activate lateral buds. Remove a small part of the crown at a time and use healthy sections as cuttings.

Humidity and foliage

Normal household humidity is enough when the root zone is watered consistently. Avoid constant misting on dense foliage and provide gentle air movement.

An airy mix

Use a mix that holds some even moisture but quickly restores air to the roots. Repot one size up when roots have genuinely filled the container.

Light, regular feeding

During active growth follow the label rate of the recommended fertiliser. Do not try to correct low light or a troubled root zone by adding more feed.

Botanical identity Origin of the cultivar The species’ range and the history of the cultivated selection

The beginning in Sappemeer

In 2012, in Sappemeer, the Netherlands, Wander Durk Tuinier crossed two unnamed selections of Tradescantia albiflora. Among their offspring, he singled out one flowering plant that combined compact growth with distinctive colouring. That selection became 'Nanouk'.

The selection takes shape

Both parent selections had white and green leaves. The new cultivar added light purple, green and greyed-green tones, together with strong leaves and an upright to broadly spreading habit. Propagation by terminal cuttings began in March 2013 at the same Dutch location.

From selection to protection

On 25 September 2018, US plant patent USPP29,711 was issued for 'Nanouk'. Propagation by cuttings preserves the original selection’s characteristics through successive generations, including its distinctive pastel foliage.

Form over time: the young crown starts upright and compact. As stems lengthen, it becomes broader and begins to extend beyond the rim of the pot.

Nodes are restart units

Each node carries a bud and can form adventitious roots in a suitable moist medium. That is why a short stem section can start a new plant.

Pink depends on pigments

Anthocyanins and areas with less chlorophyll create the pink and cream tones. Very low light reduces the clarity of the pattern.

Thicker leaves store some water

The fleshy texture provides a small buffer against brief dryness, not permission for prolonged wilting or a permanently wet root zone.

Tip pruning changes hormonal balance

Removing the tip reduces apical dominance and allows lateral buds below the cut to grow.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about growth and the plant’s most common signals.

01 Why is mine not as pink?

Intensity changes with light, leaf age and the natural distribution of colour zones. Provide bright filtered light and assess new leaves rather than only the old ones.

02 When does it need water?

When the upper third of the mix is dry and the pot feels lighter. Water evenly, drain completely and leave no water standing at the base.

03 Why is the colour fading?

Very low light reduces contrast, while harsh sun bleaches or burns tissue. Move it gradually to brighter filtered light and assess the new growth.

04 How do I keep it dense?

Tip-prune above a healthy node during active growth and root the cut ends. Even light around the pot limits one-sided stretching.

05 How do I take a cutting?

Cut a healthy section with two or more nodes, remove the lower leaves and place at least one node in water or an airy, lightly moist medium.

06 Is it safe for pets?

It is not intended for chewing. Sap may irritate sensitive skin and contact or ingestion can cause discomfort; keep it away from persistent pets.
