Family: Apocynaceae (Asclepiadoideae) • Pot diameter: 8.5 cm • Height: 12 cm
A star with attitude ⭐ — a collector succulent with a “distinctive” bloom aroma
Stapelia variegata forms compact clumps of fleshy, angled stems and spectacular, star-shaped flowers in mottled brown–yellow. Easy-care: lots of light and sparse watering. Because blooms have a characteristic scent to attract flies, place near an open window or outdoors while flowering.
Very bright spot with good airflow. Water deeply, then wait for a full dry-down before watering again. Outdoors with sun/partial shade boosts flowering in warm months.
Stapelia variegata is native to South Africa (coastal/rocky sites; poor, fast-draining soils). It forms clumps of four-angled, fleshy stems and produces large star-shaped blooms.
The flowers’ scent attracts dipterans (flies) for pollination — which is why an outdoor/balcony spot is recommended when blooming. Its ease of culture makes it a classic “gateway” succulent for new collectors.
