Sansevieria ‘Samurai’ stacks short, very thick leaves in opposing ranks, creating a tight fan reminiscent of armour. Its small scale does not reduce the morphological impact; each new blade adds another clear geometric tier.

A pale, often cream to reddish margin follows the thick blades and leads to pointed tips. This detail makes the little green armour look even more finely sculpted.

Light and position

Provide plenty of bright, filtered light for compact new growth. Increase exposure gradually when moving it to a sunnier position and avoid sudden harsh midday sun.

Correct watering

Check the substrate at depth and water only when it is dry. Moisten the entire mix evenly, let excess water drain and empty the saucer or cover pot. Avoid frequent, shallow watering.

Air humidity

It does not need misting or elevated humidity. Avoid water collecting between the leaf bases and allow gentle air circulation.

Taxonomic basis

The name Sansevieria ehrenbergii, under which this selection is traded, is treated by Kew as a synonym of the accepted Dracaena hanningtonii. The family is Asparagaceae.

The selection ‘Samurai’

‘Samurai’ is the dwarf, two-ranked form traded under the older name Sansevieria ehrenbergii. The RHS lists the name as unresolved, so its botanical association with Dracaena hanningtonii is not accompanied here by an unverified breeder or parentage claim.

Wild origin

Dracaena hanningtonii is native to north-eastern and eastern tropical Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, in desert or dry shrubland habitat.

The fan is distichy

Distichy means successive leaves are arranged in two opposing ranks. Very short distances between nodes make this pattern especially obvious.

Thickness is a reservoir

Much of the blade consists of water-storage parenchyma: cells with large vacuoles that retain water between rain events.

01 Why does it grow so slowly?

The dwarf succulent form builds a small amount of very dense tissue at a time. Good light and a correct drying cycle help, but slow growth remains normal.

02 What do yellow leaves mean?

One old lower leaf may be ageing normally. Several yellow leaves together call for a check of moisture, drainage, temperature and roots before watering again.

03 Does it need support?
