Pilosocereus braunii is a striking columnar cactus with upright growth, strong vertical ribs and dense areoles carrying pale to golden-yellow spines. Its body shows green to bluish tones depending on light and growing conditions, while the top often appears more hairy and dense, giving the plant distinctive texture and a clean architectural presence. It is ideal for very bright positions, sunny balconies, cactus collections and dry-style compositions where a plant with vertical structure, strong texture and low water needs is required. With a well-draining mineral substrate, plenty of light and careful watering, it keeps compact growth and a clean, decorative look.
Place it in a very bright position, ideally near a window with plenty of natural light or in a sheltered outdoor spot with direct sun. Pilosocereus braunii needs strong light to keep compact, upright growth and a clean spiny texture. Adjustment to strong summer sun should be gradual, especially when the plant has been grown in a more protected space. The pot must have excellent drainage and the substrate should dry well between waterings.

Taxonomic history: The name Pilosocereus braunii is widely used in cultivation and trade, but today Kew/POWO treats it as a synonym of the accepted Xiquexique gounellei subsp. braunii. For market recognisability, the plant often continues to appear under the older name Pilosocereus braunii.
Place/habitat & distribution: The group is linked with Brazil and dry, hot environments, where these cacti are adapted to strong light, fast drainage and periodic drought. This origin explains the plant’s need for a very bright position, mineral substrate and limited watering.
Naming: Pilosocereus comes from words referring to a hairy, columnar cactus, due to the areoles with hairs and spines. The epithet braunii is linked with Pierre J. Braun, an important researcher of Brazil’s cactus flora.
Growth & distinctive traits: When young, it is grown as an upright, ribbed columnar cactus with dense areoles and golden spines. Over time it develops a stronger vertical presence and becomes especially useful in cactus collections where height, structure and clean texture are needed.
