The bikini that does not fit you, but somehow suits you 🪴
A collectible variety with heart-shaped leaves and pink variegation over deep green; a compact form for bright shelves.
Place it in very bright, indirect light, such as near an east-facing window or a west-facing window with a sheer curtain. Use a well-draining aroid mix and water when the upper half of the substrate has dried. It appreciates higher humidity, stable temperatures and gentle airflow, so a pebble tray or humidifier can help in dry rooms.
Taxonomic basis: The genus Philodendron, in the family Araceae, includes neotropical aroids with climbing, creeping or self-heading growth habits.
Natural habitat of the genus: Many philodendrons come from the understory of tropical forests in Central and South America, where they grow in indirect light, high humidity and organic substrates on bark or forest floors.
The cultivated selection ‘Pink Bikini’: ‘Pink Bikini’ is a nursery-selected cultivar, associated in cultivation with Thailand/Asia, chosen for stable pink chimera-type variegation. The intensity of pink can vary from leaf to leaf and needs strong light without direct sun to remain more pronounced.
Morphology and adaptations: It forms glossy, heart-shaped leaves on a compact plant. Aerial roots help support growth. The pink colour is linked to anthocyanins in areas with reduced chlorophyll.
Growing and propagation: It prefers an aroid mix with bark, peat or coco fibre, perlite and pumice, plus careful watering. Variegation is maintained through top or node cuttings; fully green shoots are usually pruned so they do not dominate the plant.
Safety: Like many aroids, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic if chewed by pets or children. Keep it out of reach.
