Philodendron ‘Sunlight’ turns every new leaf into a small colour reveal. New growth emerges vivid red, deepens through burgundy and matures to rich dark green, keeping several colour stages visible within the same rosette.

The broad, oval leaves have a clean outline, soft sheen and substantial appearance, while each new leaf rises upright from the centre like a small flame. Its compact, balanced form gives it strong character without appearing unruly, adding colour and depth with a clean, controlled presence.

Light and position

Choose an east-facing or bright north-facing window, or a position behind a sheer curtain. Gentle morning sun may be tolerated after gradual acclimation, but strong Greek midday and afternoon sun can fade or mark the leaves.

Correct watering

Check the substrate and water when the top 2–3 cm have dried. Allow all excess water to drain away and never leave the pot standing in water.

Air humidity

It adapts to typical household humidity and appreciates a stable environment with gentle air movement. Misting is unnecessary; avoid prolonged moisture on the leaves and direct airflow from air conditioning or radiators.

Temperature

Keep it ideally at around 18–27°C and above 15°C in winter. Avoid cold draughts, contact with cold glass, sudden temperature changes and direct air-conditioning airflow.

Substrate

It needs an airy aroid mix with an organic base and coarse materials such as bark, coir fibre or chips, and perlite. The aim is to retain gentle moisture without depriving the roots of air; drainage holes are essential.

Feeding and repotting

During active growth, use a complete liquid fertiliser at the label rate and always on already moist substrate. Repot when the roots have substantially filled the pot, moving up by only one pot size at a time.

Philodendron is an accepted genus in the family Araceae. The botanical name of the genus was published by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1829.

The cultivated selection Philodendron ‘Sunlight’

The RHS lists Philodendron ‘Sunlight’ with the name status “unresolved”. The name is used for a compact, self-heading cultivated selection, but no published parentage, registered breeder or documented first introduction accompanies it.

Geographic origin of the genus

Wild Philodendron species are native from Mexico to tropical America. This range describes the natural origin of the genus, not where the cultivated Philodendron ‘Sunlight’ was developed.

Red is a developmental stage

In the young leaves of many tropical plants, anthocyanins accumulate temporarily. As the leaf completes its development, the red colour recedes and chlorophyll becomes visually dominant — which is why the crown of Philodendron ‘Sunlight’ ultimately turns green.

Self-heading does not mean stemless
