Your legal guarantee rights

What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Philodendron ‘Sunlight’

Red on arrival, green on departure

Family: Araceae · Pot diameter: 12 cm · Height: 30 cm

Araceae
Evergreen tropical hybrid
Bright indirect light
Moderate humidity
Compact self-heading growth

Philodendron ‘Sunlight’ turns every new leaf into a small colour reveal. New growth emerges vivid red, deepens through burgundy and matures to rich dark green, keeping several colour stages visible within the same rosette.

The broad, oval leaves have a clean outline, soft sheen and substantial appearance, while each new leaf rises upright from the centre like a small flame. Its compact, balanced form gives it strong character without appearing unruly, adding colour and depth with a clean, controlled presence.

What makes it special

Its colour is never static: growth itself becomes part of its display, while the self-heading form keeps the plant full and tidy.

Colour in three acts

Every new leaf begins vivid red, passes through deeper burgundy tones and settles into dark green, creating a rosette with genuine colour rhythm.

A new crown like a small flame

The newest growth rises upright from the centre and gradually unfurls, shifting the plant’s brightest focal point whenever a new leaf opens.

Compact, without climbing

The short internodes gather the leaves around a central stem, forming a dense, self-heading silhouette rather than a long climbing vine.

Why you’ll love it: every new leaf refreshes its appearance, while the compact form contains all that colour energy in one elegant, balanced plant.

In your space Placement & plant pairings Where it shines and which plants complement it best

In your space

Where it looks its best

On a side table, wide shelf, low bookcase or plant stand, with free space around the rosette. Pots in warm off-white, natural terracotta, soft charcoal or deep green showcase the transition from red to green without competing with the foliage.

Plant pairings

Plants that bring out its best

Three contrasting textures and forms that highlight the red new growth while keeping the composition balanced.

Philodendron ‘Moonlight’ — bright yellow-green foliage that makes the red and burgundy tones appear even deeper.
Anthurium clarinervium — dark, velvety, heart-shaped leaves with white veins for a contrast of texture and form.
Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus’ — trailing silver-marked foliage that frames the compact rosette without weighing it down.

Care at a glance

Light

Bright, indirect. Good light supports vivid new growth without hot direct sun.

Watering

When the top 2–3 cm of the substrate has dried. Water thoroughly and allow it to drain.

Environment

Moderate household humidity and stable temperatures, ideally around 18–27°C.

Pets

Not safe for pets. Keep it away from animals and young children who may chew it.

In-depth care Complete care guide Light, watering, humidity, substrate and feeding in detail

Light and position

Choose an east-facing or bright north-facing window, or a position behind a sheer curtain. Gentle morning sun may be tolerated after gradual acclimation, but strong Greek midday and afternoon sun can fade or mark the leaves.

Correct watering

Check the substrate and water when the top 2–3 cm have dried. Allow all excess water to drain away and never leave the pot standing in water.

Air humidity

It adapts to typical household humidity and appreciates a stable environment with gentle air movement. Misting is unnecessary; avoid prolonged moisture on the leaves and direct airflow from air conditioning or radiators.

Temperature

Keep it ideally at around 18–27°C and above 15°C in winter. Avoid cold draughts, contact with cold glass, sudden temperature changes and direct air-conditioning airflow.

Substrate

It needs an airy aroid mix with an organic base and coarse materials such as bark, coir fibre or chips, and perlite. The aim is to retain gentle moisture without depriving the roots of air; drainage holes are essential.

Feeding and repotting

During active growth, use a complete liquid fertiliser at the label rate and always on already moist substrate. Repot when the roots have substantially filled the pot, moving up by only one pot size at a time.

Botanical identity Origin of the cultivar The origin of the genus and the history of the cultivated selection

The genus Philodendron

Philodendron is an accepted genus in the family Araceae. The botanical name of the genus was published by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1829.

The cultivated selection Philodendron ‘Sunlight’

The RHS lists Philodendron ‘Sunlight’ with the name status “unresolved”. The name is used for a compact, self-heading cultivated selection, but no published parentage, registered breeder or documented first introduction accompanies it.

Geographic origin of the genus

Wild Philodendron species are native from Mexico to tropical America. This range describes the natural origin of the genus, not where the cultivated Philodendron ‘Sunlight’ was developed.

Greenleaf for Plant Nerds Scientific facts no one asked for Botanical details for those who want to know what lies behind the plant’s appearance

Red is a developmental stage

In the young leaves of many tropical plants, anthocyanins accumulate temporarily. As the leaf completes its development, the red colour recedes and chlorophyll becomes visually dominant — which is why the crown of Philodendron ‘Sunlight’ ultimately turns green.

Self-heading does not mean stemless

The central stem is present, but its internodes remain very short. This keeps the leaves gathered in a dense rosette instead of spacing them along a long climbing stem.

The inflorescence is divided into functional zones

If a mature Philodendron flowers, the true flowers are borne on the spadix: female flowers lower down, male flowers higher up, usually with a sterile zone between them. The spathe is the bract surrounding this structure.

Raphides form inside idioblasts

Needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals form inside specialised cells called idioblasts. When the tissue is chewed, the raphides are released and cause the immediate irritation associated with aroids.

Frequently asked questions

Useful answers about new-growth colour, self-heading growth and the plant’s most common signs.

01 Why does the red new leaf turn green?

This is the leaf’s normal maturation process. New growth shows stronger red and burgundy pigments, while chlorophyll green becomes dominant as the tissue matures. The transition is not a loss of character; it is the selection’s defining visual feature.

02 Does it need a moss pole or other support?

No. It is a self-heading selection with very short internodes and a compact central stem, not a climbing philodendron. A moss pole offers no meaningful benefit; the pot simply needs to stand securely and the rosette needs room to open.

03 Can it tolerate low light?

It can adapt, but growth will be slower, the rosette may turn strongly towards the light source and new growth may appear less vivid. For better form and a clearer colour transition, provide bright indirect light.

04 Does it need misting for humidity?

No. Misting raises humidity only very briefly and, without good airflow, leaves the foliage wet. Aim for stable household humidity, gentle air movement and clean leaves that dry quickly.

05 Why does a new leaf stay closed or emerge smaller?

Common causes include adjustment to a new location, insufficient light, sudden changes in moisture or a root system that needs time to establish. Do not pull the leaf open; keep conditions stable and allow it to unfurl on its own.

06 Is it safe for cats, dogs and young children?

Not if chewed or ingested. Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can cause pain and irritation in the mouth, heavy drooling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach and, if ingestion or severe symptoms occur, contact a veterinarian or doctor immediately.
