For days when straight lines feel overrated 😏
Family: Cactaceae • Pot diameter: 12 cm • Height: ~20 cm
A crested form with wavy ridges and a soft white covering of hairs and glochids that gives it a woolly, almost furry look. Its sculptural shape stands out beautifully in minimal pots and cactus displays, adding texture, contrast and visual interest even in a very small space.
Place it in a very bright to sunny position with good airflow. In a pot, use a cactus mix with extra pumice or mineral material for fast drainage, and always choose a pot with a drainage hole.
Design goal: clean geometry, high light and stable dryness around the roots.
Botanical placement: The plant is widely sold in the trade as Opuntia vestita cristata, while the accepted botanical placement of the species is usually treated as Austrocylindropuntia vestita. It belongs to Cactaceae, the cactus family.
Native background: The wild species is native from Bolivia to north-western Argentina, where it grows in dry shrubland and desert-type habitats. This background explains its preference for strong light, mineral drainage and long dry intervals between waterings.
What “cristata” means: Cristate growth is a natural change in the growing point, where the normal tip becomes elongated into a line. Instead of a simple cylindrical stem, the plant develops a wavy, comb-like crest.
Selection & spread: Crested forms are selected and propagated in cultivation because each plant develops a unique sculptural silhouette. The woolly white surface, short spines and fragile glochids make the ridges look even more dramatic.
