The Mangave Mad about Mangave® 'Praying Hands' is one of the most distinctive mangaves: a compact, almost sculptural rosette with thick, upright leaves that fold inwards like hands in prayer. Where it works best
Place it in a very bright position, close to a window with plenty of light or in a spot that gets gentle morning or late-afternoon sun. Outdoors, it does best on balconies and patios without frost, with good air circulation and a free-draining mix. In winter, protect it from frost and long periods of low temperatures by moving the pot to a sheltered, bright place. Avoid dark, enclosed rooms, as the rosette will stretch and the colour will lose intensity.
How to combine it with other plants
- With compact succulents and cacti at a lower height, so the mangave’s upright foliage becomes the sculptural focal point of the arrangement.
- With plants that have finer leaves (e.g. thin linear foliage or soft ornamental grasses) to create a strong texture contrast between the waxy, rigid leaves and softer companions.

Taxonomic background: The genus Mangave is of hybrid origin, combining Agave and Manfreda, both within the family Asparagaceae. Mangave hybrids aim to merge the architectural structure of agaves with the faster growth and mottled patterns of manfreda.
Habitat & distribution: The original species come from dry or semi-arid regions of North and Central America, with strong sun, stony, very free-draining soils and pronounced dry periods. Modern mangaves, although nursery-bred hybrids, still reflect this “desert” heritage in how they respond to light and water.
Selection & breeding: 'Praying Hands' is a protected hybrid from the Mad about Mangave® series by Walters Gardens, with EU plant protection number EU 20230994. It was selected for its unique, vertical leaf arrangement, thick, waxy foliage and the combination of green colour with dark spotting and violet shades.
Propagation & rarity: As a PBR-protected hybrid, 'Praying Hands' is propagated under control, mainly via in vitro / tissue culture by authorised growers. This keeps the cultivar relatively rare in the mass market, making it especially attractive to succulent collectors and fans of contemporary botanical décor.
1) Substrate: Use a very free-draining cactus/succulent mix with a high proportion of mineral material (perlite, pumice, grit) so water drains quickly and roots never sit in moisture.
2) Watering: Water sparingly, only when the mix has dried out completely at depth. In spring and summer you can water slightly more often to keep the rosette tight, always avoiding standing water in the outer pot.
3) Position & winter: Keep it in a very bright position. In frost-prone areas, move the pot to a sheltered, bright spot or indoors until the cold passes, to avoid damage to foliage and roots.
