Suitable for any plant, in soil, mineral substrate such as PON, or a mix of the two. It measures the moisture of the substrate — not the water level in a reservoir.

The color shows when watering is needed

The Watering Indicator is placed once and remains in the substrate. Its colored cotton core responds to moisture and transfers the indication to the upper visible part.

Works in potting soil, LECHUZA-PON, other mineral substrates, and mixtures.
The white indicator means the plant needs water.
The blue indication means that the substrate has enough moisture.
Remains permanently in its position and can be read without being removed or rotated.
No batteries, charging, or other power source required.

The bottom hole is completely covered by the substrate, while the top remains outside and visible.

It operates reliably on mineral substrates, where moisture is not easily assessed by touch or by the appearance of the surface.

The clear change from blue to white helps to avoid both premature watering and prolonged dryness.

The indicator refers to the moisture of the substrate around the lower hole of the gauge.

The plant needs watering

When the visible part returns to white, the substrate has dried enough to require water.

Blue

There is sufficient moisture

As long as the indicator remains blue, no new watering is needed. Wait for it to return to white.

Correct placement in four steps

The position of the indicator is critical for it to correctly contact the moisture of the substrate.

01 · Choose the spot

Place the indicator near the root zone, without pressing it onto thick roots.

02 · Insert 7–8 cm

The bottom hole must be fully covered, while the top hole and the indicator remain outside.

03 · Water regularly

After the first placement, the indicator needs approximately 20–30 minutes to turn blue.

04 · Monitor the color

Water when the indicator turns white and wait while it remains blue.

First use in damp substrate

Activate it first in a glass of water

If the substrate is already wet, leave the indicator in a glass of water for about 20 minutes. As soon as the reading turns blue, place it in the planter at the correct depth.

Summer · sun · heating

Needs change, the indicator adjusts

Evaporation increases in hot weather, in sunny locations, and in heated spaces. Instead of a fixed calendar, follow the actual change in color.

The duration of reliable indication depends on the material surrounding the indicator. The following times are the official indicative recommendations of LECHUZA.

LECHUZA Moisture Meter

The Watering Indicator stays permanently in the planter and works in soil, PON, and mixtures. If you want a portable tool for instant checking in different planters with conventional soil, the Moisture Meter is inserted only during measurement and removed immediately afterward. It is not used in pure PON.

What do the white and blue colors indicate?

White indicates that the substrate has dried, and the plant needs watering. Blue indicates that there is still enough moisture and no additional water is needed.

Does it work in LECHUZA-PON and other mineral substrates?

Yes. The Watering Indicator is suitable for potting soil, pure LECHUZA-PON, other mineral substrates and mixtures, for indoor or outdoor plants.

How deep should it be placed?

Insert it 7–8 cm into the substrate. The lower hole must be completely covered, while the upper hole and the visible part of the indicator must remain outside.

How long does it take to show the first indication?

After the first placement and watering, the indicator changes color within about 20–30 minutes. If the substrate is already wet, you can first place it in a glass of water for about 20 minutes until it turns blue.

Can it remain permanently in the planter?

Yes. It is designed for permanent placement in the substrate. For proper reading, do not remove it or rotate it.

Does it need batteries, and when should the indicator be replaced?

It does not require batteries, charging, or any other power source. The recommended replacement time depends on the substrate: about 9 months in organic soil, 9–12 months in mineral substrates such as PON, about 1 year in peat, and 1–2 years in hydroponics, sphagnum, or bark.

What is the difference from the LECHUZA Moisture Meter?

The Watering Indicator remains permanently in the planter and works in soil, PON, and mixtures. The Moisture Meter is a portable instant measurement tool for conventional soil, is removed immediately after use, and is not suitable for pure PON.
