Kiryu, also known as Kiryuzuna, is a hard granular Japanese mineral substrate with a neutral pH. Its stable structure and high permeability to water and air make it especially useful for pines, junipers, Chamaecyparis and other conifer bonsai that need clean drainage and root-zone oxygenation.

The material

Hard Japanese mineral substrate for conifer bonsai

Kiryu is a granular mineral material with neutral pH and naturally occurring trace elements. Use it alone or blend it with Akadama, pumice, lava or pozzolana for a more open, free-draining root zone.

Pure Kiryu in a 1.6 L pack, with no added fertiliser, for standalone use or as a hard mineral component in a bonsai mix.

01Remove visible dust

Sieve or rinse lightly only if very fine particles are present.

02Set the blend

Use Kiryu alone or combine it with Akadama, pumice, lava or pozzolana to suit the individual conifer.

03Fill without crushing

Work the grains between the roots and secure the tree without heavy pressure.

04Water until it drains cleanly

After repotting, water evenly and allow all excess to leave through the drainage holes.

Kiryu drains quickly, but watering remains individual

Check actual moisture inside the pot, the season, wind, temperature and the composition of the mix. No fixed schedule suits every conifer.
