Kanuma is a naturally acidic, granular Japanese substrate for azaleas and other acid-loving bonsai. The medium grade of approximately 5 mm combines high moisture retention with good permeability, giving roots access to water without creating a heavy, closed mix.

The material

Pure Kanuma with a naturally acidic profile

Kanuma is a granular Japanese clay material. Use it alone for acid-loving bonsai or add it to another mix when a more acidic profile and greater moisture retention are needed.

01Remove only excess dust

If visible fine dust is present, sieve or rinse the material lightly without prolonged soaking.

02Choose standalone use or a blend

Use Kanuma alone for suitable acid-loving bonsai, or combine it with another mineral material to adjust moisture and drainage.

03Fill without heavy compression

Work the grains gently between the roots and secure the plant without crushing the material.

04Water and allow to drain

After repotting, water evenly and allow all excess to leave through the drainage holes.

Higher moisture retention requires checking the pot itself

Do not follow a fixed watering calendar. Check moisture inside the substrate, the weight of the pot, the season and airflow before watering again.
