Kalanchoe pinnata is a distinctive succulent with upright fleshy stems and pairs of leaves that stand out for their wavy, toothed edges. The foliage has a green base, while in very bright conditions the leaf margins and young stems can develop reddish to copper-red tones, giving the plant a livelier and more decorative look. It is suitable for bright windowsills, sheltered balconies, succulent collections and small dry-style compositions, as long as it is grown in a well-draining substrate and watered only when the soil has dried well.
Place it in a very bright position, ideally near a window with plenty of natural light or in a sheltered outdoor spot with gentle direct sun. Kalanchoe pinnata needs enough light to keep a more compact habit and stronger colouring along the leaf edges. In low light, the stems may stretch and the foliage may become paler and looser. Exposure to strong summer sun should be gradual, especially if the plant has been grown in a more protected environment.
Composition goal: a bright succulent planting with upright growth, fleshy foliage, strong texture, well-draining substrate and limited watering.
Taxonomic history: Kalanchoe pinnata belongs to the family Crassulaceae, a family that includes many familiar succulents with fleshy leaves and adaptations to dry periods. In the trade and in older sources, it may also appear as Bryophyllum pinnatum, a name that remains very recognisable for the group of kalanchoes that can form small plantlets from leaves.
Place/habitat & distribution: The species is associated with tropical and seasonally dry environments, where the ability to store water in the leaves helps the plant manage periods of reduced moisture. In cultivation, this adaptation translates into a need for a bright position, a very well-draining substrate and careful watering.
Naming: The epithet pinnata refers to the form of the leaves, which in mature plants can appear more compound or show clear lobes. In the young stage, as in small-pot plants, the leaves are often simpler, fleshy and wavy at the edges.
Growth & spread: Kalanchoe pinnata has vigorous growth in suitable conditions and can be propagated easily from stem or leaf pieces. In a pot, it remains more controlled, as long as it has the right light, limited watering and a substrate that does not stay constantly wet.

Water only when the substrate has dried well. Constant moisture around the roots can cause rot, especially in low light or in winter.
In suitable conditions and on more mature leaves, it may produce small plantlets or propagate easily from leaf and stem pieces. In young plants, this is not always immediately visible.
Not for places where pets or children can chew it. Kalanchoe are considered toxic to dogs and cats if eaten.
