Homalomena ‘Lemon Lime’ looks as though it has saved the brightest corner of a tropical forest entirely for its leaves. The heart-shaped blades unfurl in clear chartreuse, with pronounced veins and a softly embossed texture that changes character as the light moves. It is one of those plants that instantly makes a room feel livelier and more considered.

Light and position

Place it near an east- or north-facing window, or set it back from a bright south- or west-facing window behind a sheer curtain. In very low light, new growth may become more open and deeper green. Always move it towards brighter conditions gradually.

Correct watering

Keep the mix lightly and evenly moist, never saturated. Check it with a finger and water when the top 2–3 cm has dried, wetting the entire root zone. Empty any water left in the saucer or outer pot and do not follow a fixed calendar.

Air humidity

It performs best with steady moderate to higher humidity, especially while heating or air conditioning is running. Keep it away from warm or cold draughts and favour a humidifier or grouping plants over frequent misting that leaves the foliage continually wet.

Temperature

Keep it warm, ideally at 18–27°C. Below roughly 15°C, or when winter light drops sharply, growth slows; allow the mix to dry a little further before the next watering at those times.

Potting mix

It needs a rich yet airy mix that holds controlled moisture while leaving oxygen around the roots and short rhizome. An organic base combined with coarse bark and porous mineral components is preferable to heavy, compacted soil. Drainage holes are essential.

Feeding and repotting

While new leaves are forming, use a complete balanced foliage fertiliser with micronutrients at roughly half the recommended strength every 4 weeks. Reduce or pause feeding when growth stops, light is low or the plant is stressed. If fresh mix contains incorporated nutrition, wait until its stated feeding period has elapsed. Repot once the roots fill the pot, moving up by one size and keeping the base of the petioles at the same level.

1832: the name Homalomena

Austrian botanist Heinrich Wilhelm Schott published the genus Homalomena in 1832 in Meletemata Botanica. The name became established for a large group of evergreen terrestrial aroids, often recognised by leaves with heart-shaped bases and inflorescences held low within the foliage.

How ‘Lemon Lime’ acquired its name

By the early 2020s, an exceptionally bright Homalomena had begun appearing more frequently in the European houseplant trade. Its chartreuse blades and green petioles naturally suggested the name ‘Lemon Lime’. As it moved from nursery to nursery, the concise name Homalomena ‘Lemon Lime’ became its established commercial identity, carrying the luminous selection from production benches into contemporary indoor-plant collections.

The genus's wild roots

Wild Homalomena species range from tropical and subtropical Asia to the south-western Pacific. Many are terrestrial plants of humid forest floors, stream margins or shaded, well-drained slopes. That is the natural history of the genus; ‘Lemon Lime’ is a more recent cultivated selection of the international foliage trade.

Its petiole contains a pulvinus

In Homalomena, the petiole forms a characteristic swollen, joint-like region — the pulvinus — at roughly two-thirds of its length. Shifts in cell pressure within it allow the blade to make subtle changes in orientation towards the light.

Its fine venation is parallel-pinnate

Primary lateral veins leave the midrib and run into a marginal vein, while secondary and tertiary veins are arranged almost in parallel. This network supports the leaf's characteristic gently folded surface.

The spadix carries separate sexual zones

The true flowers are naked, without petals or sepals, and packed onto the spadix. Female flowers occupy the lower zone and male flowers sit above them, often with sterile male flowers called staminodes between or alongside the fertile zones.

In the studied Homalomena propinqua, the spadix generates heat around dawn on two successive flowering days. That warmth increases the release of volatile scent compounds, chiefly 2-butanol, precisely when its beetle pollinators arrive.

01The leaves dropped suddenly. Does it need water immediately?

Check the mix first. If the top 2–3 cm is dry and the pot feels noticeably light, water thoroughly and let it drain. If the mix is still very wet, do not add more water; inspect drainage, temperature and root health, because drooping can also accompany stress from excessive moisture.

02Why is one old lower leaf turning yellow?

A single old leaf may yellow naturally as the plant renews itself. If several leaves yellow together, especially while the mix stays wet for days, check whether it is being watered faster than it uses moisture or whether drainage is inadequate.

03Will the lime colour remain this bright?

The cultivar retains its chartreuse character, although intensity varies with leaf age and available light. In a very dark position, new growth may become deeper green. Move it gradually into brighter indirect light, never abruptly into strong sun.
