Botanical identityIdentity & natural originAccepted name, cultivar history and the wild plant’s natural range
Accepted name
The accepted name is Gymnocalycium quehlianum (F.Haage ex Quehl) Vaupel.
From Echinocactus to Gymnocalycium
It was first published in Echinocactus and transferred by Friedrich Vaupel in 1922.
Endemic to Córdoba
The species is endemic to Córdoba Province, Argentina, in dry grassland and rocky sites.
From natural habitat to care: Argentine seasonally dry sites with strong light plus some grass cover help explain a preference for abundant light without extreme scorch. In a pot, provide mineral drainage, warm-season water after dry-down and a dry winter.
Greenleaf for Plant NerdsScientific facts nobody asked forBotanical detail for anyone who wants to understand the structures behind the plant’s appearance
The ‘naked cup’ is floral
Flower tubes lack the hairs or spines seen in many other cacti.
The stem sinks in drought
Water loss can pull it lower without indicating death.
Ribs divide into tubercles
Cross-grooves create its characteristic angular appearance.
Flowers arise near the crown
The crown remains the active flowering zone.
