What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Family: Cactaceae · Pot diameter: 10.5 cm · Height: ~10–15cm

  • Cactaceae
  • Barrel-shaped body
  • Strong deep ribs
  • Golden young spines
  • Endemic to Sinaloa

Ferocactus schwarzii is a compact natural barrel with a deep-green body, powerful ribs and ranks of golden-yellow spines that darken as they mature. The precise radial organisation of its areoles gives the plant an almost engineered quality, while strong curves create volume without visual clutter.

At a young stage it strikes an ideal balance between miniature scale and strength: solid, collectible and immediately recognisable. With age it can develop far greater presence and bright yellow flowers, giving this narrowly endemic Mexican species an impressive long-term trajectory.

What makes it stand out

Three defining details that turn its botanical identity into real presence for a collection and interior.

Barrel geometry

Deep ribs form a symmetrical body with powerful three-dimensional volume.

Golden young spines

Newer areoles light the crown with warm yellow to amber tones.

A narrow endemic identity

Its natural range is restricted to Sinaloa, adding genuine collector interest.

Why you’ll love it: it combines classic barrel-cactus geometry with warm spines and a rare Mexican identity worth growing on.

In your space

Where it looks its best

Give it clean space in heavy terracotta or matte stone, finished with pale gravel that brightens the deep-green body. A position slightly below eye level reveals the symmetrical apical ring of areoles.

Plant pairings

Plants that complement it

Pair it with plants that genuinely share its light, substrate and seasonal rhythm. Separate pots keep care precise for each one.

  • Echinocactus grusonii — denser golden spines and a related barrel form.
  • Astrophytum myriostigma — almost spineless geometry as a quiet contrast.
  • Agave victoriae-reginae — a strict white-lined rosette sharing the same dry rhythm.

Care at a glance

Light

Full sun or exceptionally strong brightness after acclimation.

Watering

Water thoroughly only after the mix has dried completely.

Dry seasonal growth

Warm growth, dry air and a cooler dry winter rest.

Pets & children

Powerful spines are hazardous to eyes, skin and paws.

Detailed careComplete care guideLight, drying cycle, climate, substrate and feeding in detail

Light and position

Give it the brightest available position and increase direct sun gradually. Good exposure keeps the body rounded and new areoles closely spaced.

Correct watering

Wait for complete drying to the bottom and a clear loss of weight. Water evenly, allow full drainage and never add small amounts between complete cycles.

Airflow and humidity

It needs dry air and free movement between the spines. Avoid misting and positions where the base remains damp.

Temperature and seasonal rhythm

Growth is concentrated in the warm bright season. In winter keep it bright, cooler but frost-free, and much drier.

Substrate

Use a strongly mineral cactus mix in a pot with generous drainage holes. Do not oversize the pot or bury the base.

Feeding, repotting and handling

After fresh Sybasoil, allow the initial nutrition to be used. Later apply Cactus & Succulent Focus as directed only during active growth.

Botanical identityIdentity & natural originAccepted name, taxonomic history and natural or cultivated provenance

An accepted species

The accepted name is Ferocactus schwarzii G.E.Linds., published in 1955 within Cactaceae.

Endemic to Sinaloa

Its native range is restricted to Sinaloa in north-western Mexico, within desert or dry shrubland habitat.

A name honouring a collector

The epithet honours Fritz Schwarz, associated with discovery and collection of the species. It is not a cultivar or hybrid.

From natural habitat to care: Its narrow origin in bright dry Sinaloa explains the thick ribbed body, strong spines and tolerance of long dry intervals. In a pot it calls for abundant sun, a mineral root zone and a clearly dry winter phase.

Ribs act like folds

The body can swell after moisture and contract during drought without tearing readily.

Spines change colour

Young golden spines naturally darken and grey as they age.

The crown is the active centre

New ribs, areoles and future flowers are organised by the apical meristem.

IUCN lists it as Data Deficient

DD means evidence is insufficient for a secure risk category, not that threats are absent.

Frequently asked questions

Useful answers about light, watering, seasonal rhythm and the plant’s correct identity.

01When does it need watering?

When the mix has dried completely and the pot feels noticeably light.

02Why are the spines losing their gold colour?

That is natural ageing. Newer spines at the crown usually carry the warmest tone.

03Can it stand in full sun?

Yes, after gradual acclimation and with airflow during extreme heat.

04Why is it elongating?

Unnaturally thin new growth often indicates insufficient brightness. Old distortion will not reverse.

05What does Data Deficient mean?

It means evidence is insufficient for a secure risk assessment; it does not mean “not at risk”.

06Can a young plant flower?

It usually requires considerable maturity, strong brightness and a stable seasonal cycle, so flowering should not be treated as an immediate promise.
