Fatsia japonica is an accepted evergreen shrub. ‘Variegata’ is a cultivated form with stable cream margins.

East Asian origin

The native range is documented in southern Korea and Japan to the Nansei Islands, primarily in the subtropical biome.

It was once called Aralia japonica

The original name Aralia japonica was published in the eighteenth century and is now a synonym. The accepted genus is Fatsia.

The leaf is palmately lobed, not compound

Lobes are parts of one continuous blade, not separate leaflets. They all radiate from a shared central point.
