Euphorbia aeruginosa Schweick. Synonyms:Echinocereus pectinatus var. rubispinus Family:Euphorbiaceae Pot diameter:6.5cm
Very decorative variety that forms a low shrub 15-30cm high. The shoots are blue-grey or brown-green with many brown spines. The plant branches both below and above the soil surface. It is a species which, like its relative, is Euphorbia schinzii, has great diversity and variability. Easy to maintain, ideal for decorative pots. It grows very well in porous and well-drained substrate, but is generally not demanding in soil type. In its native habitat it receives rain in both Summer and Winter, so can be watered throughout the year (except during the colder months of Winter). Mature plants can remain outdoors year-round in areas with mild winters.
They need enough light to maintain compact growth, and exposure to full sun locations wants to be done with a gradual adjustment. It flowers profusely and impressively.
Extra: Like all euphorbias, when a shoot is cut, it gives off a white, milky liquid known as latex, which can cause irritation if it comes in contact with the skin. Care is therefore needed to avoid contact especially with the mouth or eyes.
Origin: South Africa.
