Dionaea muscipula - Dionaea Pot diameter: 12cm. 12.12 mm.
Charles Darwin described it as 'one of the most magnificent plants in the world'.
The Dioneia attracts its prey using a sweet nectar. When the insect touches one of the trichomes in its claws twice, or touches two trichomes at the same time, an electrical charge closes the trap, creating a kind of 'cell' for the trapped insect. It then releases substances to decompose the insect's tissues and after about a week the trap opens again, waiting for its next prey. It is a plant that if placed indoors prefers locations with plenty of light. It likes humid conditions and is a suitable plant for enclosed terrariums.
Care
Place some gravel in a saucer up to the middle and fill with water. The plant should rest on the gravel and not in the water.
This way you give the plant the extra moisture it needs.
Water the plant in its soil a little every other day or so to keep it relatively moist.
The plant should be in a bright spot but not in the sun. 1-2 hours of morning sunlight won't hurt.
Do not touch the plant's claws by hand and do not place dead insects in them.
