Where to place it

Choose a very bright position, with 1–4 hours of direct sun, ideally morning sun, for compact form and colour. Water deeply, then let it dry completely. Use an extremely well-draining substrate, such as cactus mix with pumice or coarse sand. The pot must have drainage holes, and standing water in the saucer should be avoided. Keep above 10–12°C.

Taxonomic history: The genus Crassula (>200 spp.) includes iconic succulents from South Africa. ‘Tom Thumb’ is considered a dwarf clone within the Crassula rupestris complex, with stacked triangular leaves forming a small column-like crown.

Habitat and distribution: South Africa, dry rocky sites with extreme drainage and seasonal rainfall. Adapted to full light as well as cool nights.

Naming and etymology: “Crassula” comes from the Latin crassus, meaning thick, because of the fleshy, water-storing leaves. ‘Tom Thumb’ means “miniature”, referring to its tiny size.

Ecology and physiology: CAM metabolism — it opens its stomata at night to conserve water. Pinkish to red edges appear under strong light and cooler conditions.

Relatives and distinction: More miniature in scale than Crassula perforata or C. rupestris — the leaves are smaller and denser, with finer texture.

Propagation and stability: Easy from stem or leaf cuttings; roots quickly in a dry, well-draining medium. Clonal propagation preserves its traits reliably.
