Family: Crassulaceae • Pot diameter: 5.5 cm
Crassula 'Hummel's Sunset' is the golden version of the classic jade plant: compact, sturdy and incredibly decorative, with leaves that brighten the space thanks to their yellow edges and warm orange-red tones when they receive enough light. The effect truly resembles a sunset across the foliage — a natural accent that fits beautifully in minimal homes, bright offices and sunny balconies. It grows into a small shrub-like form, pairs beautifully with a decorative pot and can be shaped easily for a bonsai-style look. It has the kind of polished presence that looks premium without asking for much: with the right light and careful watering, it can last for years, mature beautifully and become even more impressive as it grows.
On a sunny windowsill or near a south-facing window to keep the “sunset” colouring intense. Outdoors, it prefers a position with plenty of light and good drainage in the pot. The basic principle is simple: plenty of light and soil that dries quickly — this keeps the plant tight, full and clearly coloured.
Composition goal: sun + mineral/well-draining soil + low watering, for a tight shape and strong colour tones.
Taxonomic history: Crassula ovata belongs to the family Crassulaceae and is one of the most classic cultivated succulents, with a large number of cultivated forms (cultivars) that differ in leaf shape, growth habit and colouration.
Origin, habitat & distribution: The species is associated with South Africa, where it thrives in bright, dry-heat environments. Its resilience and ability to store water in the leaves are key elements of its ecology.
Naming/etymology & synonyms: The name 'Hummel's Sunset' directly refers to the “sunset” effect created by the yellow edges and red tones in strong light. In the market, it is also often seen as Crassula ovata 'Sunset'.
Selection/breeding & distribution: The cultivar is linked with a selected sport from Crassula ovata and has received the RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM). It is propagated vegetatively through stem or leaf cuttings so the characteristic colouration remains stable.

Water only when the soil has dried completely. If in doubt, wait a little longer — overwatering is the most common cause of problems.
Yes. With light pruning at the right time, you can encourage branching and keep a more compact, shrubby form or bonsai-style look.
Keep it in a bright position and protect it from temperatures below 5°C. It usually also needs less watering, because the soil dries more slowly.
