The kind of cactus that looks calm because it already knows it is collectible 🌵
Family: Cactaceae • Pot: 10.5 cm • Height: 15 cm
The Coryphantha elephantidens is a striking cactus with a broad, flattened body and large fleshy tubercles that give it a sculptural, almost carved appearance. It does not need dramatic size or colour to stand out, because its shape already has enough visual strength to work like a natural design object on a shelf, table or bright cactus collection. When grown well, it may also reward you with large funnel-shaped flowers at the crown in the warmer season, adding a softer contrast to its bold, collector-style structure without taking away from its disciplined look.
Keep it in a very bright position, ideally with several hours of strong light during the day. It performs especially well near a south- or west-facing window, in a bright enclosed balcony, or in a protected outdoor spot with plenty of sun once temperatures are reliably warm. The key is to give it light, airflow and a substrate that dries quickly, so the body stays firm and well shaped.
Role in a composition: the low, sculptural cactus that adds weight, form and a collector’s feel without needing much size.
Botanical identity: Coryphantha elephantidens is an accepted species in the family Cactaceae, placed in a genus known for prominent tubercles and crown flowering.
Publication history: The name was published in Cactées 35 in 1868.
Native range: Its native range is Mexico.
Ecology & habit: It is associated with desert or dry shrubland conditions, which explains its preference for strong light, sharp drainage and restrained watering. The broad, flattened body and prominent tubercles are what make the species look so distinctive even when it is not in flower.

Yes. It wants plenty of light and generally looks better the brighter the position is. That is where it keeps a better shape and sturdier growth.
Yes, as long as it is placed in a very bright position, ideally near a window with abundant light. In a dim room it will gradually lose its proper form.
Much more sparingly than in summer. In winter it should stay fairly dry, especially if the space is cooler.
It can flower beautifully when it gets very good light, the right watering rhythm and generally stable conditions. It does not reward pressure; it rewards consistency.
