Family: Cactaceae • Pot diameter: 5.5 cm
Espresso cactus: strong and straight ☕️
Compact, ribbed column with symmetrical areoles and elegant spines; a rare botanical accent for mini collections and shallow bowls.
Full sun or very bright spot. Water deeply and repeat only when the mix is completely dry; near-dry in winter. Prefers a high-mineral mix (pumice/river sand/perlite) and a pot with a drainage hole.
Taxonomic basis: Genus Buiningia (fam. Cactaceae) — named in honor of Dutch cactologist A.F.H. Buining. Species: B. brevicylindrica.
Range: Endemic to eastern Brazil (rocky hills/quartzite uplands). Sunny slopes with poor, stony soils and seasonal rains.
Morphology: Small–medium, short cylindrical column with ribs, regularly spaced areoles, and brush-like spines. Flowers typically pale (cream/yellowish) near the stem apex.
Adaptations: Thick water-storing parenchyma, CAM metabolism; waxy skin and compact geometry reduce transpiration.
Culture/propagation: Slow-growing; prefers very mineral mixes and sun. Propagated mostly from seed.
