Succulent, thornless, star-shaped succulent (hence the name 'Astro' from the Greek word for star). It is native to central and northern Mexico where it is found at altitudes of 750-1500 metres. It grows on stony, limestone soils on vertical and steep slopes. Its distribution is limited by the need for stony, calcareous soils.
Care
Summer growing and easy to maintain. It is also found as grafted but grows very well with its own roots. Needs a well-drained substrate and a small amount of organic matter (to maintain its compact shape and not elongate). Fertilizing in Spring and Summer with a low-Nitrogen fertilizer leads to rapid growth of the plant. Potassium helps the plant stay compact and healthy. Care is needed in watering. Dilute from March to October as its delicate roots suffer in excess moisture conditions. Therefore it should be watered when the soil is dry. As the temperature drops, reduce watering and stop watering completely in winter when the plant is in conditions of 5 to 15 °C and necessarily in low humidity.
