What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Senecio 'mont blanc'

One touch and… the softness is hard to believe 🫧

Family: Asteraceae · Pot diameter: 8.5 cm · Height: 15–20cm

  • Asteraceae
  • Cylindrical succulent leaves
  • Dense silver-white felt
  • Upright branching form
  • RHS-listed PBR cultivar

Senecio 'mont blanc' wraps cylindrical succulent leaves in dense silver-white felt, creating the appearance of small frost-covered fingers. Soft visual texture blurs each outline and makes the plant look dusted with fresh snow or fine velvet.

A luminous monochrome palette and upright sculptural growth bring immediate design impact to a minimal setting, while the unusual surface makes it unforgettable among green succulents. It is a distinctive collector choice for anyone drawn to texture, cool colour and plants that appear almost unreal.

What makes it stand out

Three defining details that turn its botanical identity into real presence for a collection and interior.

Natural silver-white velvet

Dense trichomes cover every leaf and create a luminous soft surface.

Cylindrical sculptural line

Upright finger-like leaves repeat along the stems and build crisp volume.

Cool contrast with dark plants

Its near-white palette immediately brightens a collection and makes neighbouring greens appear deeper.

Why you’ll love it: it resembles a succulent covered in snow, offers uncommon texture and turns a small position into a crisp contemporary display.

In your space

Where it looks its best

Place it in matt black, deep green or natural terracotta so the white felt stands out. Leave air around the stems and avoid frequent-touch positions because the surface is best preserved untouched.

Plant pairings

Plants that complement it

Pair it with plants that genuinely share its light, substrate and seasonal rhythm. Separate pots keep care precise for each one.

  • Haworthiopsis limifolia — dark relief foliage for strong tonal contrast.
  • Echeveria ‘Aquila’ — broad glaucous rosette continuing the cool palette.
  • Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’ — glossy tubular leaves against matt white felt.

Care at a glance

Light

Very bright light and gentle to good sun after acclimation.

Watering

Water when the mix is almost dry, without wetting the white felt.

Silver-white succulent

Dry air, mild active periods and protection from frost and enclosed extreme heat.

Pets & children

Species-specific safety evidence is insufficient; discourage ingestion and wash hands after handling.

Detailed careComplete care guideLight, drying cycle, climate, substrate and feeding in detail

Light and position

Give it a very bright position with good morning or late-afternoon sun, introduced gradually. Adequate intensity keeps internodes short and the white felt dense.

Correct watering

Water at the base when the mix is almost fully dry and the pot feels lighter. Allow complete drainage and do not leave droplets held in the felt.

Airflow and humidity

Dense felt needs moving air so it does not retain dampness. Avoid misting, bathrooms and contact with wet surfaces; remove dust only with a gentle puff of air.

Temperature and seasonal rhythm

Its South African foundation often responds best in mild temperatures and may slow in extreme heat. Reduce moisture in winter and avoid frost.

Substrate

Use a light, rapidly draining succulent mix with plenty of pumice or lava. Do not bury stems more deeply and keep the surface clear.

Feeding, repotting and handling

During active growth, gently diluted Cactus & Succulent Focus used as directed is sufficient. If pruning is needed, use a clean tool and let cuts dry.

Botanical identityIdentity & natural originAccepted name, taxonomic history and natural or cultivated provenance

The accepted base is Caputia tomentosa

Kew accepts Caputia tomentosa (Haw.) B.Nord. & Pelser. Senecio haworthii and Kleinia haworthii are synonyms.

‘Mont Blanc’ is a recognised cultivar

The RHS lists Senecio haworthii ‘Mont Blanc’ as an accepted cultivar name with PBR status. The cultivar has no natural range of its own.

A South African wild foundation

Wild Caputia tomentosa is endemic to South Africa’s Cape Provinces. The RHS public record does not document an originator, selection year or exact breeding method for ‘Mont Blanc’.

From natural habitat to care: In bright dry Cape habitats, succulent leaves and dense felt limit moisture loss and reflect radiation. In a pot it needs abundant light, airflow that keeps hairs dry and base watering between clear dry cycles.

Greenleaf for Plant NerdsScientific facts nobody asked forBotanical detail for anyone who wants to know what lies behind the plant’s appearance

The white is felt, not bloom

The surface is covered in dense attached trichomes, unlike the fragile wax bloom of an Echeveria.

Hairs reflect radiation

White covering reduces surface heat load and creates a milder microclimate around the leaf.

It belongs to the daisy family

Despite its succulent appearance, it is an Asteraceae with flowers organised into composite heads.

The genus Caputia is recent

Modern transfer from Senecio to Caputia was published in 2012, explaining why the older name still dominates trade.
