What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Philodendron‘Birkin’

Plant or painting? You decide! 🖌️

Family: Araceae · Pot diameter: 6 cm · Height: 10 cm

  • Fine white pinstripes
  • Compact rosette
  • Deep glossy green
  • Every leaf unique
  • Collectable cultivar

Philodendron ‘Birkin’ looks as if it has been drawn with a very fine white brush: bright lines follow the venation over deep glossy green and change in density from leaf to leaf. Its compact upright crown brings a clean contemporary presence to a desk, shelf or small side table, while unpredictable pinstriping gives it the collectable character of a plant that never repeats itself exactly.

Newer leaves often open brighter and mature into an intricate network of cream and green lines, allowing the crown to show several stages at once. In a restrained cover pot against a clean background, it becomes a living graphic object: elegant from a distance and richly detailed up close.

What makes it special

The cultivar stands out through changing white pinstripes and compact architecture.

Form

Successive leaves open around a short central axis to form an orderly rosette.

Colour

White and cream lines appear over deep green with different intensity on every blade.

Texture

The smooth glossy surface makes the fine bands look crisp and drawn.

Why you’ll love it: it combines a clean modern silhouette with evolving pinstripes that make every new leaf a small reveal.

In your space

Where it looks its best

On a plant stand or broad side table where the rosette has room to open. A plain pot in cream, charcoal or deep green keeps attention on the foliage’s changing colours.

Plant pairings

Plants that complement it

Choices with compatible light needs and contrasting textures keep the arrangement balanced.

  • Anthurium clarinervium — a velvet heart with a white geometric network.
  • Asplenium antiquum — undivided rippled fronds for calm green contrast.
  • Scindapsus treubii ‘Moonlight’ — compact metallic silver-green.

Care at a glance

Light

Bright, indirect light. Variegated forms need steady light without harsh sun.

Water

When the top 2–4 cm are dry. Water thoroughly and let all excess drain away.

Atmosphere

Moderate to higher humidity and roughly 18–29°C, away from cold or hot draughts.

Pets

Not safe to chew. It contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, watering, humidity, substrate and nutrition in detail

Light and position

Keep it near an east-facing or bright north-facing window, or behind a sheer curtain. Low light reduces leaf size and variegation, while harsh sun can scorch pale tissue.

Correct watering

Check the mix before every watering and wait until the top 2–4 cm are dry. Water evenly, let it drain and never leave water standing in the cover pot.

Air humidity

It adapts to average household humidity, but steady humidity and gentle air movement support cleaner edges and smoother unfurling.

Temperature

An ideal range is roughly 18–29°C. Avoid cold glass, air-conditioner draughts and sudden changes that slow growth.

Substrate

Use an airy aroid mix with ample pore space around the roots and moderate moisture retention. Unrestricted drainage is essential.

Nutrition and repotting

During active growth, use a balanced liquid feed at the label rate and only on already moist substrate. Repot when roots fill the pot, moving up by one size.

Botanical identity Origin of the cultivar The species’ range and the history of the cultivated selection

Natural range

‘Birkin’ is a cultivated selection in the genus Philodendron, not an accepted wild species.

Habitat

‘Birkin’ is a cultivated selection within the genus Philodendron. Its exact origin story has not been published consistently with the name.

Botanical identity

Clonal propagation preserves the core trait, yet the amount of white pinstriping still varies from leaf to leaf.

From natural habitat to care: Its relationship with tropical aroids explains the preference for an airy root zone, stable warmth and a bright position supporting clear new growth.

Greenleaf for Plant Nerds Scientific facts nobody asked for Botanical details for anyone curious about the plant behind the foliage

Pinstriping is a cellular mosaic

Different zones of the blade produce different amounts of chlorophyll, creating the fine bright lines.

New leaves change as they harden

Colour, sheen and contrast shift as a tender blade matures and tissues develop their full structure.

Variegation can recede

Some growth may produce greener leaves because the pattern is not distributed perfectly evenly through every new growth point.

Aroid tissues contain raphides

Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals cause marked irritation if foliage is chewed.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about growth and the plant’s most common signals.

01 Why did a new leaf emerge almost green?

The amount of pinstriping varies naturally. Assess several successive leaves and maintain plentiful filtered light before concluding that the growth has reverted to green.

02 What do several yellow leaves mean?

One old lower leaf may age normally. Several at once call for checks of moisture, drainage, light and root condition before adding water.

03 Does it need support?

Climbing stems benefit from slim firm support, while trailing growth tends to retain smaller leaves. Secure only the stem and leave petioles free.

04 Why is a new leaf stuck?

An abrupt humidity change, dry roots or cold can hinder unfurling. Stabilise conditions and never pull the soft blade.

05 How do I take a cutting?

Cut a healthy stem section with at least one node and an active growth point. A single leaf without a node cannot produce a new plant.

06 Is it safe for pets and children?

Not for chewing or ingestion. Insoluble calcium oxalate raphides can cause marked oral irritation.
