What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Peperomia‘Eden Rosso’

For shelves, desks and “there’s literally no room left” 🧩

Family: Piperaceae · Pot diameter: 10.5 cm · Height: 15 cm

  • Piperaceae hybrid
  • Corrugated green foliage
  • Red leaf undersides
  • Bright indirect light
  • Compact rosette

Peperomia ‘Eden Rosso’ combines narrow, deeply corrugated leaves with rich red undersides. The contrast appears along every curve, making the small rosette look far more intricate than its size suggests.

Up close, reflections, veins and small leaf-to-leaf differences give Peperomia ‘Eden Rosso’ far more detail than its compact silhouette first suggests.

What makes it special

Its visual depth comes from the combination of colour, corrugation and compact growth.

Two-sided colour

The upper surface reads as deep green, while the red underside flashes between the curves and around the rosette.

Deeply corrugated leaves

Sunken veins create shadow and highlight, producing a texture that reads from a distance without large leaves.

A neat low rosette

Short petioles and central growth keep the plant compact, ideal for shelves and small surfaces.

Why you’ll love it: it brings red colour, linear texture and architectural form into very little space.

In your space Placement & plant pairings Where it looks its best and which plants complement it
In your space

Where it looks its best

On a bright shelf, desk or small side table near a window but away from harsh midday sun. A matte pot in terracotta, cream or deep green lets the foliage take the lead.

Plant pairings

Plants that complement it

Choices with compatible light needs and contrasting textures keep the arrangement balanced.

  • Maranta leuconeura — painted venation beside the compact rosette.
  • Phlebodium aureum — blue-green lobed fronds for soft contrast.
  • Chamaedorea elegans — fine palm-like texture that adds height.

Care at a glance

Light

Bright, indirect light. Gentle morning sun is usually fine, but harsh midday sun is not.

Water

When the upper third to half of the substrate is dry. Water thoroughly, then let it drain completely.

Atmosphere

Average household humidity and 18–27°C. Protect it from cold draughts and temperatures below 15°C.

Pets

Generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs, although it is not intended for chewing.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, watering, humidity, substrate and nutrition in detail

Light and position

Provide plentiful filtered light for compact growth and clear colour. Low light stretches the stems, while strong direct sun can bleach or mark the leaves.

Correct watering

Check with a finger or by the pot’s weight and water only after the upper layer is clearly dry. Empty the cover pot every time; the fleshy tissues handle a short delay better than constant wetness.

Air humidity

Normal household humidity is adequate when watering is consistent. Avoid keeping the foliage continuously wet and provide gentle air movement.

Temperature

Keep it in a stable, warm room, ideally 18–27°C. Cold glass, winter draughts and sudden temperature drops can cause spotting or leaf loss.

Substrate

Use a fine yet airy mix that drains quickly and does not compact around the fine roots. Drainage holes are essential.

Nutrition and repotting

Feed lightly only during active growth, following the label rate. Repot when roots fill the pot and move up by one size only; an oversized pot stays wet for longer.

Botanical identity Origin of the cultivar The species’ range and the history of the cultivated selection

A cultivated hybrid

‘Eden Rosso’ is a cultivated Peperomia hybrid rather than a cultivar of P. caperata. Its formal description records a cross between P. marmorata and P. metallica.

The selection ‘Eden Rosso’

The plant was selected by Obed Smit in Sappemeer, the Netherlands, and received US plant patent PP24,379 in 2014.

Tropical parent lines

The parent species belong to the tropical genus Peperomia. Modern ‘Eden Rosso’ is a product of controlled horticultural selection and is propagated vegetatively to retain its traits.

Greenleaf for Plant Nerds Scientific facts nobody asked for Botanical details for anyone curious about the plant behind the foliage

Corrugation changes the light

Raised and recessed areas reflect light differently, so one leaf shows several greens without true variegation.

Red colour comes from pigments

Red to burgundy undersides are associated with anthocyanin pigments. Their intensity varies with leaf age and light conditions.

The rosette has short internodes

Its compact form is not created by pruning, but by very short distances between stem nodes.

The flowers do not look like petals

As in other Peperomia, tiny flowers sit on a slender elongated inflorescence. The cultivar’s main value remains its foliage.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about growth and the plant’s most common signals.

01 Why are the undersides not as red?

Intensity is affected by leaf age, genetic expression and light. Provide steady bright indirect light without midday sun, and assess several new leaves rather than a single one.

02 When does it genuinely need water?

When the upper third to half of the mix is dry and the pot feels noticeably lighter. Water evenly, let it drain and never leave water standing in the cover pot.

03 What do soft yellowing leaves mean?

They often point to excess moisture or a poorly oxygenated root zone. Pause watering, check drainage and roots, and remove only tissue that has actually rotted.

04 Does it need frequent repotting?

No. Fine roots perform well in a relatively snug pot. Repot during active growth when roots have genuinely filled the container, moving up by one size only.

05 How can it be propagated?

Use a healthy stem section containing a node and, in several species, a leaf or leaf section. Work with a clean tool, an airy medium and gentle moisture without saturation.

06 Is it safe for cats and dogs?

Peperomia species are generally considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing can still cause mechanical irritation or stomach upset, so keep the plant away from persistent pets.
