What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Hoyaerythrina

It hangs around but never weighs you down 🧷

Family: Apocynaceae · Pot diameter: 9 cm · Height: 15 cm

  • Elongated firm leaves
  • Bold netted venation
  • Dark waxy green
  • Climbing growth
  • Rare botanical species

Hoya erythrina has the dark, sculptural appeal of a truly distinctive Hoya. Its elongated firm blades combine deep waxy green with strong venation, forming an elegant climbing line that draws the eye upward. It is a collectable botanical species with powerful presence even without flowers, ideal on a high shelf, in a vertical display or where light can reveal the relief of every leaf.

As stems lengthen, pairs of leaves create a steady visual rhythm, while seasonal flower clusters may add deeper warm tones and rich detail. It looks beautiful with natural wood, dark ceramics and restrained lines, in a display that feels mature, rare and distinctly botanical.

What makes it special

A firm elongated blade, deep green colour and clear venation give this Hoya a strong collectable identity.

Form

Long elliptical blades appear in pairs and balance along flexible climbing stems.

Colour

Deep green is crossed by visible central and lateral veins, while warmer tones may appear in the flowers.

Texture

The thick waxy surface and slight relief give the blades a firm, almost leathery character.

Why you’ll love it: it stands apart through large veined leaves and dark climbing elegance that feels genuinely rare.

In your space Placement & plant pairings Where it looks its best and which plants complement it
In your space

Where it looks its best

Near a bright window with a slim support or moss pole so the nodes can climb and the leaves can mature. Leave breathing room around the crown so each leaf shape reads clearly.

Plant pairings

Plants that complement it

Choices with compatible light needs and contrasting textures keep the arrangement balanced.

  • Scindapsus pictus — velvet hearts with larger silver markings.
  • Peperomia ‘Pepperspot’ — tiny round leaves and reddish stems.
  • Philodendron hederaceum ‘Micans’ — copper velvet on a broader heart-shaped trail.

Care at a glance

Light

Plentiful bright indirect light, with gentle morning sun after acclimation.

Water

Water after a substantial part of the mix has dried and allow all excess to escape.

Atmosphere

Average to higher humidity, good airflow and roughly 16–28°C, without abrupt changes.

Pets

Best kept away from pets as a precaution. Prevent access and chewing.

Detailed care Complete care guide Light, watering, humidity, substrate and nutrition in detail

Light for dense growth

Provide strong filtered light. Gradual exposure to gentle morning or late-afternoon sun can support flowering and colour without scorching.

A wet–dry cycle

Check the mix at depth and notice the pot's weight. Water thoroughly once it has dried sufficiently and never leave water standing at the base.

Air around the stems

Maintain average to higher humidity together with gentle airflow. Stagnant, very humid air increases the risk of spotting and damage.

Stable temperature

Most Hoya species perform well at roughly 16–28°C. Protect foliage from cold glass, chilly draughts and direct heat.

An airy Hoya mix

Use the specialised Hoya mix with a coarse, porous structure. Repot only after roots have genuinely filled the pot.

Gentle feeding

During active growth use Nutri One according to the label and only on already moist mix. Reduce or pause when growth slows.

Botanical identity Origin of the cultivar The species’ range and the history of the cultivated selection

Natural range

Hoya erythrina is an accepted species occurring naturally in Vietnam and Peninsular Malaysia.

Habitat

It occurs in wet tropical habitat and grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte on aerated surfaces.

Botanical identity

The epithet erythrina refers to red and is associated with the warm colouring of its flowers.

From natural habitat to care: Its epiphytic and lithophytic life explains the need for a porous root zone, clean airflow and moisture that moves quickly away from the surface.

Greenleaf for Plant Nerds Scientific facts nobody asked for Botanical details for anyone curious about the plant behind the foliage

Bold venation reinforces the blade

The vascular network transports water and photosynthetic products while mechanically supporting the large leaf.

The waxy epidermis limits losses

The thick cuticle slows evaporation and protects underlying tissues on exposed surfaces.

Flower spurs are perennial

A healthy spur can form another inflorescence in a later cycle, so it is removed only after drying completely.

Pollen travels in pollinia

As in many Apocynaceae, pollen grains are organised into compact masses carried as a unit by pollinators.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about growth and the plant’s most common signals.

01 Why is a new leaf paler?

Young blades often deepen in colour and harden gradually. Allow them to mature without handling before assessing final colour and texture.

02 Why are the leaves wrinkling?

They often show that the plant has used some of its water reserves, but check the mix and roots first. Wrinkled leaves with wet mix may indicate root trouble.

03 Should old flower spurs be removed?

Not while they remain healthy. Many Hoya species flower again from the same permanent spur, so remove only parts that have dried completely.

04 Why is it not flowering?

Common reasons include insufficient light, immature growth, frequent moves or excessive nitrogen feeding. Stabilise conditions first.

05 When does it need repotting?

When roots fill the pot, the mix has lost its structure or water passes through excessively fast. Move up one size only.

06 Is it safe for pets?

For this particular plant, we recommend keeping it away from cats and dogs as a precaution. This does not classify the plant as toxic. It is not intended for consumption; prevent access and chewing.
