What does the legal guarantee mean for plants?

The legal guarantee concerns the plant’s conformity at delivery. It is not a guarantee of survival or growth for two years. Each issue is assessed taking into account the nature of the plant, its care and the conditions in which it is kept. Your statutory rights remain unaffected.

Astrophytum nudum

Less spine, more geometry✨

Family: Cactaceae · Pot diameter: 6.5 cm

  • Cactaceae
  • Nearly spineless
  • Fleck-free surface
  • Star-shaped outline
  • Slow growing

Astrophytum nudum is an exceptionally clean, almost minimalist cactus. Its smooth green skin lacks the characteristic white flecking of the typical form, allowing strong ribs and a star-shaped outline to read without distraction.

Its symmetry resembles a small architectural object, each rib guiding the eye towards the woolly crown. Slow growth and stable geometry give it genuine collector appeal, while the yellow flower produced at maturity adds a bright, unexpected finish.

What makes it stand out

Three defining details that turn its botanical identity into real presence for a collection and interior.

A clean green surface

The absence of white flecks reveals even colour and every subtle curve.

A star-shaped outline

Strong ribs form a geometric profile best appreciated from slightly above.

A rarer minimalist selection

The Nudum form stands apart from typical bishop’s caps and appeals to collectors of clean form.

Why you’ll love it: it looks designed rather than grown and brings rare visual calm to a collection full of spines and texture.

In your space

Where it looks its best

Place it in bright light where it can be viewed slightly from above. White, black or geometric ceramic emphasises the clean silhouette, while fine dark grit makes the green surface appear even smoother.

Plant pairings

Plants that complement it

Pair it with plants that genuinely share its light, substrate and seasonal rhythm. Separate pots keep care precise for each one.

  • Echinocereus rigidissimus subsp. rubispinus — dense red pattern against the smooth surface.
  • Euphorbia obesa — a different botanical lineage with comparable geometric precision.
  • Lophophora williamsii — a low glaucous volume in a separate pot with a similar bright rhythm.

Care at a glance

Light

Very strong light with acclimated sun and some shelter in extreme heat.

Watering

Deep but infrequent watering in growth, only after complete drying.

Seasonal rhythm

Warm growth and a bright, cool, nearly dry winter rest.

Pets & children

Nearly spineless, but not intended for chewing or ingestion.

Detailed careComplete care guideLight, drying cycle, climate, substrate and feeding in detail

Light and position

Provide exceptionally bright light and direct sun after slow acclimation. Because Nudum lacks dense white flecking, its skin is more exposed to sudden harsh heat.

Correct watering

During warm growth, water well once the mix has dried completely. Keep water away from the neck and maintain it almost dry during the cool winter cycle.

Airflow and humidity

Dry air and constant ventilation protect the smooth surface and base. Avoid misting, especially at low temperatures.

Temperature and seasonal rhythm

It grows slowly from spring into autumn. A bright, cool and dry winter rest preserves form and supports maturity.

Substrate

Use a strongly mineral mix in a relatively deep small pot that follows the root. Keep the neck above the surface and the drainage hole unobstructed.

Feeding, repotting and handling

With fresh Sybasoil, wait about two months. Afterwards use a small amount of diluted Cactus & Succulent Focus only during active warm growth.

Botanical identityIdentity & natural originAccepted name, taxonomic history and natural or cultivated provenance

A cultivar of Astrophytum myriostigma

The RHS records Astrophytum myriostigma ‘Nudum’ as an accepted cultivar name. The species belongs to Cactaceae and is known for its star-shaped ribbing.

Wild origin belongs to the Mexican species

The species A. myriostigma comes from dry areas of north-eastern and central Mexico on limestone-rich rocky ground.

Nudum is a cultivated selection

The name denotes the absence of white flecking found on the typical form. Authoritative public records do not document a specific breeder or hybrid parentage.

From natural habitat to care: Limestone-rich rocky sites of the Mexican species provide intense light and rapid drainage around deeper roots. Nudum retains that physiology but has less surface shading, so cultivation calls for a mineral profile, complete drying and especially gradual sun exposure.

Greenleaf for Plant NerdsScientific facts nobody asked forBotanical detail for anyone who wants to know what lies behind the plant’s appearance

White flecks are hairs

On the typical form they consist of minute trichomes; Nudum has few or none.

Ribs can change

Rib number and outline may shift as the body matures.

Areoles remain present

Although spines are absent or minimal, areoles remain the sites from which flowers form.

The body becomes more columnar

The young globular body elongates slowly with age while retaining its star-shaped outline.

Frequently asked questions

Useful answers about light, watering, seasonal rhythm and the plant’s correct identity.

01Why does it lack white flecks?

That is the defining feature of ‘Nudum’, which has few or no surface trichomes.

02Does it have spines?

It is usually spineless or nearly so, although woolly areoles remain visible.

03When should it be watered?

Only during the active warm period and after the mineral mix has dried completely.

04Why is there a brown mark?

It may be sun scorch, an old injury or firm corking. Soft spreading tissue requires immediate inspection.

05When can it flower?

Once sufficiently mature, with strong light, active growth and a distinct winter rest.

06Is nudum a botanical variety?

In horticulture it is treated as the named cultivar Astrophytum myriostigma ‘Nudum’.
