White night flowers, golden spines and patience until the show 🤍
Family: Cactaceae • Pot diameter: 8.5 cm
Trichocereus spachianus is a classic upright columnar cactus with cylindrical growth, clear vertical ribs and characteristic golden to yellow-brown areoles that give it the look of the well-known Golden Torch cactus. When young, it stays slender and elegant, while over time it can produce more stems from the base and develop a stronger architectural presence. It is an excellent choice for bright windowsills, small pots, cactus arrangements and carefully styled dry plantings, combining a clean vertical line, easy care and impressive white night flowers on mature plants.
Place it in a very bright position, with sun after gradual acclimation, so the stem stays strong, compact and correctly coloured. Indoors, it needs a spot close to a very bright window, while outdoors it suits a protected balcony or patio without prolonged winter moisture. The growing mix should be mineral, light and very free-draining, with watering only when the pot has dried completely.
Taxonomic history: Trichocereus spachianus belongs to the family Cactaceae and remains especially well known in cultivation under the name Trichocereus. In current botanical use it is usually treated under Echinopsis spachiana, while older names and trade references remain common because the plant is one of the most recognisable upright South American cacti in cultivation.
Native range & habitat: The species has a natural range from Bolivia to northwestern Argentina, in dry and shrubland environments. There it grows in open positions with strong light, fast drainage and periods of low available moisture. This background explains its need for a very bright position, mineral growing mix and careful watering in cultivation.
Naming & morphology: The epithet spachianus honours the French botanist Édouard Spach. The plant is characterised by upright cylindrical stems with pronounced ribs, yellow areoles that become greyer with age and clusters of yellow-brown spines. Its vertical growth and luminous spine colour explain the international common name Golden Torch cactus.
Flowering & ornamental value: On mature plants, Trichocereus spachianus can produce large white flowers that open mainly at night, a particularly impressive feature for a cactus with such a clean cylindrical form. In cultivation it is used in pots, rock gardens and cactus collections, where it adds height, structure and a bright golden texture.

Water sparsely, only when the growing mix has dried completely. In winter, watering should be very limited, especially if the plant is kept in a cooler spot.
It can flower on mature, well-lit plants, producing large white night-opening flowers. Strong light and a drier winter period help support flowering.
