Strelitzia reginae begins as a youthful fan full of promise, already showing the sculptural quality that made it an icon of exotic planting. Firm grey-green leaves rise cleanly from the base and immediately add order, height and character. With every fresh leaf the silhouette becomes richer, gradually developing into an impressive rhizomatous clump with increasing presence and precision.
Its lighter presence suits smaller bright corners where it can become the first layer of a tropical collection. Beside finer or darker foliage, the clean fan looks even more graphic.

The natural story of Strelitzia reginae begins in South Africa, from the southern and eastern Cape Provinces to KwaZulu-Natal. There it grows as a rhizomatous clump, and its unusual inflorescences evolved in close association with bird pollinators.
In 1773 Scottish collector Francis Masson introduced it to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Sir Joseph Banks named the genus Strelitzia for Queen Charlotte, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, while reginae reinforced the royal dedication. The name was published in 1788, and Franz Bauer’s later detailed illustrations helped establish the plant within European botanical and horticultural tradition.
Two blue inner tepals fuse into an elastic arrow-shaped enclosure around the stamens and style. When a nectar-feeding bird lands on it, the weight opens the slit and brings pollen into contact with the bird’s feet or breast.
