Where to place it

Place it in full sun for maximum glow and movement; it also tolerates light partial shade. It works beautifully in front of shrubs or along bed edges to soften straight lines. Give the tuft room to breathe and avoid permanent moisture around the roots.

Taxonomic basis: Stipa tenuifolia (often sold commercially as Nassella tenuissima) — a perennial ornamental grass in the family Poaceae.

Naming status: The commercial name ‘Ponytails’ refers to a selected clone with extremely fine foliage and rich tufts.

Breeding & selection: A garden selection valued for light movement, fast establishment and tolerance to dry, warm conditions.

Flowering/foliage traits: Very fine, hair-like leaves; delicate flower spikes that turn silvery in the light and golden in summer.

Reference habitat & cultivation: Dry slopes and grasslands; prefers poor, gravelly substrates with excellent drainage.

Difference from related selections: Finer texture and more fluid movement compared with other Stipa/Nassella types with thicker foliage.

Propagation & stability: Clump division in late winter to early spring; control seed production if self-seeding is not desired.

1) Substrate: Loose, sandy/gravelly mix with very good drainage, such as universal soil plus perlite and pumice.
