It adapts to typical household humidity but keeps cleaner leaf edges in more stable, moderate to high humidity. Avoid direct airflow from air conditioning or radiators.
Keep it in a stable, warm environment. Sudden temperature changes and cold draughts stress the foliage more than small, normal fluctuations.
It needs an organic yet airy mix that retains gentle moisture while draining freely. Drainage holes are essential.
Use gentle, balanced fertiliser during active growth. Repot when the roots have substantially filled the pot, moving up by only one pot size at a time.
Spathiphyllum is an accepted genus in the family Araceae. The botanical name of the genus was published by Heinrich Wilhelm Schott in 1832.
‘Diamond Variegata’ is sold as a modern variegated cultivated selection of the genus Spathiphyllum. The trade name is used at genus level, without a confirmed species epithet. Its breeder, parentage and date of first selection have not been published alongside the name.
Wild Spathiphyllum species are native from Mexico to tropical America, as well as Malesia and the western Pacific. This range describes the natural origin of the genus, not where the cultivated ‘Diamond Variegata’ was developed.
The white part is the spathe, a modified bract. The true, very small flowers are densely arranged on the central spadix — the characteristic inflorescence of aroids.
The white and cream areas contain less chlorophyll and contribute less to photosynthesis than green tissue. The balance between green and white is therefore not purely aesthetic.
Spathiphyllum tissues contain insoluble, needle-shaped calcium oxalate crystals inside specialised idioblast cells. The raphides are released when the tissue is chewed and cause immediate irritation in the mouth.
When cells lose water, their internal pressure — turgor — falls, and the petioles temporarily lose support. This is a cue to check the substrate, not an automatic instruction to water.

Not necessarily. The distribution of white and green varies naturally from leaf to leaf, so a single greener leaf is not enough to draw a conclusion. Observe several successive new leaves and provide bright indirect light. Do not remove healthy green foliage for purely aesthetic reasons.
Check the substrate first. If it is dry to a depth of 2–3 cm, water thoroughly and allow it to drain. If it is already very wet, do not add more water; check drainage, temperature and root condition. Drooping does not always mean thirst.
The most common causes are low humidity, wide swings in watering, salt build-up from water or fertiliser, and intense sun. Correct the likely cause first, then remove only the completely dry tissue with clean scissors.
This is a normal stage in the inflorescence’s maturation, not a sign of disease. Once the spathe has completed its cycle and begins to dry, you can remove the entire flowering stem low at the base.
Flowering is influenced by maturity, season, overall condition and, above all, the amount of bright indirect light. A very dark position or excessive nitrogen feeding favours foliage over flowering. The absence of blooms alone does not mean the plant is unhealthy.
Not if chewed or ingested. Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can cause pain and irritation in the mouth, heavy drooling, vomiting or difficulty swallowing. Keep it out of reach and, if ingestion or severe symptoms occur, contact a veterinarian or doctor immediately.
