Tube-shaped leaves — because “normal” would be too predictable 🌀
Family: Crassulaceae • Pot diameter: 6.5 cm
Sempervivum tectorum 'Oddity' is a collectible, slightly “eccentric” succulent that looks nothing like a classic houseleek: its leaves don’t open flat, but curl and “close” into distinctive tubes, forming a rosette with a sculptural texture and a bold personality. It instantly upgrades balconies, terraces and sunny windowsills outdoors, and over time it produces offsets that build small clusters. It’s one of those plants that looks designer-made — while in reality it’s built to cope.
Outdoors in a sunny or bright partially shaded spot with good airflow. The better the light, the tighter and cleaner the rosette. Avoid constant moisture and areas that stay wet after rain — the secret to keeping it perfect is fast drainage and letting the soil dry fully between waterings.
Design role: a small sculptural accent with strong texture.
Taxonomic background: The genus Sempervivum belongs to the family Crassulaceae and is famous for rosettes with water-storing leaves — a key reason for its drought tolerance and resilience in exposed sites. Many “odd” forms in cultivation today come from selecting unusual traits that appear in growth.
Naming & etymology: The genus name literally means “always alive”, reflecting how reliably it keeps foliage and survives harsh conditions. The cultivar name 'Oddity' was chosen because the leaf form is truly unusual: instead of opening out, the leaves curl into tubes.
Selection, propagation & spread: This cultivar is associated with succulent collector Sandy McPherson and became known among growers in the late 1970s. It is considered a stable form in cultivation and is propagated vegetatively (via offsets) to keep the distinctive tubular morphology true to type.
Note on the form: Some references also mention links to natural hybridisation in related Sempervivum, which may help explain why it differs so strongly from typical forms.

Yes — it prefers sun or very bright partial shade. In stronger light it keeps a more compact rosette and a cleaner, sharper form.
Water only when the soil dries out completely. “A little, often” is the wrong approach for this succulent.
It tolerates low temperatures as long as it isn’t sitting in constant wet soil. In winter, the key is drying properly after rain.
The rosette that flowers completes its life cycle afterwards. The offsets continue as normal and keep the pot full.
