Small, variegated and improbably well put together 🌿
Family: Crassulaceae • Pot: 12 cm • Height: 12 cm
Sedum lineare 'Variegatum' is a low, spreading succulent with narrow, elegant foliage and bright cream variegation that gives the whole plant a crisp, polished look. Its slender stems form a dense, low mat and, as they spread, the plant develops a calm, almost architectural movement that works beautifully on windowsills, shelves, pots with a defined rim or small mixed succulent arrangements. It is one of those plants that does not need to shout to stand out; its shape, variegation and very easy care do all the work.
Place it in a very bright spot, ideally near a window with plenty of natural light or in a position that receives a few gentle hours of sun. There it will keep its variegation cleaner and its growth denser. In darker positions it usually turns greener and loses some of its tight, compact look. What suits it most is light, air and a substrate that dries quickly.
Design role: the low, variegated succulent that brings light, fine texture and softer movement without weighing down the overall look.
Relationship to the species: Sedum lineare 'Variegatum' belongs to Sedum lineare, a well-known East Asian evergreen stonecrop valued for its narrow leaves and calm, spreading habit.
Native range: The species is native to parts of China and Japan, and is naturally suited to bright, sharply drained positions where low succulents can grow densely without needing much moisture.
Naming: The name lineare refers to the narrow, linear shape of the leaves, while 'Variegatum' highlights the bright cream variegation that makes this cultivated form especially popular.
Distinctive character: It stands out for its fine, low stems, fleshy leaves edged in creamy white and its tendency to spread densely, creating a neat, carpet-like effect.
Why growers love it: It combines the toughness of a sedum with a more refined variegated look and a more elegant, fine-leaved character than many other low-growing forms in the genus.

|---|---|
| 🌿 Botanical name | Sedum lineare 'Variegatum' |
| 🪴 Pot / Size | 12 cm • height 12 cm |
| ☀️ Light | Very bright position • in good light the variegation looks cleaner and the growth stays denser. |
| 💧 Watering | Sparse • allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. |
| 🪨 Substrate | Very well-drained succulent mix • avoid heavy soils that stay wet for long periods. |
| 📏 Mature size | It stays low, but gradually spreads wider and forms a denser, carpet-like mass. |
| 🌼 Flowering | Small, star-shaped yellow flowers in late spring to early summer, adding a light seasonal detail. |
| 🐾 Pet note | Generally considered low-risk, though it is still best kept away from pets that like to chew plants. |
It wants very good light and can take some gentle direct sun, as long as it is introduced gradually. In darker positions it becomes looser and greener.
It is mainly spreading, but in pots with a rim the stems can fall outward quite beautifully. That calm movement is part of its charm.
In lower light it can turn greener. For a cleaner creamy-white margin, keep it in a very bright position.
Yes, very much so. It is one of those succulents that forgives a lot, as long as it is not kept in permanently wet substrate.
