Green that reads as black
Very high visual density makes the colour appear almost black, especially against a pale background.

Black like your coffee and even more addictive ☕
Family: Araceae · Pot diameter: 12 cm · Height: 15–20 cm
Scindapsus treubii · Dark form opens thick elongated blades in deep green that appears almost black away from direct reflection. The glossy surface draws a bright line across the dark leaf, giving the small climbing silhouette unusual depth.
The juvenile silhouette of Scindapsus treubii · Dark form stays clean and flexible, while successive nodes gradually reveal larger, more mature leaves as the stem climbs.
The Dark form relies on light absorption, satin gloss and a strict elongated blade rather than silver patterning.
Very high visual density makes the colour appear almost black, especially against a pale background.
The smooth cuticle reflects light in a concentrated highlight across the dark surface.
Thickness and narrow oval geometry keep every leaf distinct as the stem climbs or trails.
Why you’ll love it: it brings near-black foliage without a heavy silhouette and creates striking contrast with a pale pot or silver plants.
Near a bright window with a slim support or moss pole so the nodes can climb and the leaves can mature. Leave breathing room around the crown so each leaf shape reads clearly.
Choices with compatible light needs and contrasting textures keep the arrangement balanced.
Bright, filtered light. It tolerates moderate light, but pattern and leaf size hold better near a bright window.
When the upper 3–5 cm are dry. Water evenly, drain completely and do not keep the roots permanently wet.
Average to higher humidity, gentle airflow and roughly 18–28°C. Protect from cold draughts.
Not for chewing or ingestion. Insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can cause marked oral irritation.
Provide plentiful diffused light and avoid sudden harsh midday sun. In very low light, internodes lengthen and silver patterns lose contrast.
Check the mix to finger depth. Once the upper 3–5 cm are dry, wet the whole root ball and empty the cover pot; a fixed calendar is no substitute for checking.
Average household humidity is acceptable, while somewhat higher humidity helps new leaves unfurl cleanly. Air movement remains essential.
Keep it at roughly 18–28°C and away from cold glass or air conditioning. Below about 15°C growth slows and wet roots become more vulnerable.
Greenleaf Plant Search maps Scindapsus to Sybasoil Aroid Mix. Its airy structure and open drainage holes allow even wetting without prolonged saturation.
During active growth use Liquid Gold Leaf at the label rate as part of a normal watering. Repot when roots fill the container, moving up by one size only.
Scindapsus treubii is an accepted climbing species in Araceae.
Dark Form is used in cultivation for the near-black, deep-green form of Scindapsus treubii. It is a horticultural description rather than a formally registered cultivar; a breeder and parentage have not been published with the name.
The wild species is native to Peninsular Malaysia, north-western Borneo and Java, in wet tropical habitat.
From natural habitat to care: In tropical understorey, the dark blade uses filtered light while the climbing stem seeks trunks. Indoors, bright indirect light and airy Aroid Mix retain dense growth without leaving roots stagnantly wet.
High concentrations of green pigments, other phenolic compounds and surface microstructure absorb much visible light. The remaining colour reads as very deep green.
A smooth waxy cuticle reduces diffuse scattering and creates a more mirror-like reflection, making a narrow highlight stand out strongly.
When nodes anchor securely, the stem can invest more resources in larger blades rather than long searches for support.
The smooth dark appearance does not reveal insoluble calcium oxalate crystals within the tissues. Ingestion can cause immediate pain, drooling and swelling.
Practical answers about growth and the plant’s most common signals.
A blade often deepens in colour as it hardens and pigment and cuticle development complete. Allow it to mature under steady bright indirect light.
One old lower leaf may be ageing normally. Several together call for a check of moisture, drainage, light and roots before adding water or fertiliser.
Only if you want climbing maturation and larger leaves. Secure the stem at an internode to a rough surface and leave petioles and blades free.
Check irregular watering, very dry air, salt build-up and harsh sun. Do not automatically add water if the mix remains moist.
Cut a healthy section with at least one node and a viable bud. A plain leaf without a node cannot create a new climbing stem.
Not for chewing or ingestion. Insoluble calcium oxalate raphides cause immediate oral irritation. Seek professional advice if ingestion or symptoms occur.
