For when you want a hanging plant with personality. 😉
Family: Saxifragaceae • Pot diameter: 10.5 cm • Height: ~20 cm • Hanging pot
Saxifraga stolonifera 'Tricolor' is the classic “strawberry begonia” in a more collectible tri-colour form: rounded leaves with silvery veins, pink–cream edges and red undersides, hanging over the pot together with thin red stolons loaded with small baby plants. In a hanging pot it easily fills shelves, windows and corners with texture and movement, without taking up much floor space – an ideal solution for bright partial shade in homes or offices.
Saxifraga stolonifera 'Tricolor' loves bright partial shade with indirect light: next to a window with a curtain, in a north/east-facing aspect, or in a room lit from two sides but without harsh midday sun. It prefers cool to mild temperatures, away from radiators and cold drafts. The substrate should stay slightly moist with good drainage so the roots are well aerated without sitting in stagnant water.
Composition goal: a soft, cool “curtain” of foliage with tri-colour highlights and stolons that fills the eye without looking heavy.
Taxonomic history: Saxifraga stolonifera belongs to the genus Saxifraga in the family Saxifragaceae, a group of plants that includes dozens of species adapted to rocky, cool environments. The species was described in the 18th century and has since given rise to many cultivated forms, including ornamental tri-colour selections such as 'Tricolor'.
Habitat & distribution: In the wild it occurs in parts of East Asia (China, Japan, Korea), on cool, shaded slopes, rock crevices and forest edges. There it forms low mats of foliage and spreads by stolons, rooting wherever it finds moist, organic substrate.
Naming & etymology: The name Saxifraga comes from the Latin saxum (rock) and frangere (to break), referring to the ability of many species to grow in rock fissures. The epithet stolonifera means “bearing stolons”, describing its way of spreading with slender stems that carry baby plants. The cultivated form 'Tricolor' stands out for its tri-colour variegation and red leaf undersides.
Selection & propagation: 'Tricolor' originated from selecting plants with a stable, eye-catching variegation pattern and coloured undersides. It is propagated vegetatively through stolons or in vitro to preserve the same clonal traits. Worldwide it is used as a trailing pot plant for indoors or protected, shaded balconies.

| ☀️ Light | Bright partial shade with plenty of indirect light; avoid harsh midday sun. |
| 💧 Watering | Regular; keep the substrate slightly moist but never permanently soaked. |

| 📏 Final size | Height 10–20 cm with stolons that can reach 30–40 cm in length under good conditions. |
| 🐾 Toxicity | Toxicity: considered suitable for homes with children and pets. |
It needs bright partial shade with plenty of indirect light. A little morning or late afternoon sun is fine, but harsh midday sun can scorch the pale leaf margins.
Water when the top 1–2 cm of the substrate have dried, so the deeper layer remains slightly moist. Avoid stagnant water in saucers or cachepots to protect the roots.
Propagation is very easy from the stolons: rest the small rosettes on a pot with fresh substrate, let them root, and cut the connection to the mother plant once they are stable.
Yes; it’s ideal for people starting out with houseplants, as long as you provide indirect light, slightly moist substrate and avoid extreme temperatures or very dry, hot air.
