Sansevieria ‘Black Diamond’ raises broad blades in a green so deep that they appear almost black from a distance. A fine golden-green line quietly lights their edges, while faint cross-banding emerges when light falls across the surface.

The firm blades stand close together, with slender bands of shadow between them. This contrast between deep colour and a luminous edge gives ‘Black Diamond’ its quiet, almost jewel-like character.

Light and position

Provide plenty of bright, filtered light for compact new growth. Increase exposure gradually when moving it to a sunnier position and avoid sudden harsh midday sun.

Correct watering

Check the substrate at depth and water only when it is dry. Moisten the entire mix evenly, let excess water drain and empty the saucer or cover pot. Avoid frequent, shallow watering.

Air humidity

It does not need misting or elevated humidity. Avoid water collecting between the leaf bases and allow gentle air circulation.

The selection ‘Black Diamond’

‘Black Diamond’ is used commercially for very dark snake plants and circulates as a cultivated Dracaena selection at genus level.

Near-black remains green

The near-black effect is the appearance of a very deep green, not a separate black pigment. Light intensity, viewing angle and leaf age affect how dark the blade appears.

The surface changes how colour is seen

The epidermis and cuticle affect light reflection. The same leaf can therefore look more matte or more lustrous from different positions without its underlying colour changing.
