The summer raspberry with the best aroma!
Family: Rosaceae · Pot diameter: 13cm · organically grown · Height: approximately 45cm
Rubus idaeus ‘Summer Chef’ is a summer raspberry created for the tasting moment: large red fruit with intense fruity aroma, floral and gently vanilla-like notes and a long full finish. Strong canes overwinter reliably and crop generously in July, allowing the plant to combine genuine culinary quality with a confident garden presence. It is the choice for anyone who values aroma first, while still wanting large attractive berries and a strong summer harvest.
Pick early in the morning when fruit releases cleanly and remove fruited canes immediately after the July harvest.
‘Summer Chef’ came from a breeding partnership with one clear criterion: summer fruit should carry memorable aroma.
Fruity, floral and gently vanilla-like notes open in fully ripe fruit.
Red berries have an attractive shape and full juicy texture.
Canes maintain good winter health and support rich summer flowering.
Why you will love it: It turns a simple bowl of raspberries into a genuine flavour experience without sacrificing vigour or productivity.
Plant in sun or bright partial shade, allowing 60–80cm between plants. In very hot areas choose morning sun.
Aromatic, yellow and low pink flowers create a flavour garden around the canes.
Sun or bright partial shade; afternoon protection during prolonged heat.
Even moisture from flowering until the end of harvest.
Very good winter hardiness and healthy cane performance in cold or windy climates.
Wash fully ripe fruit before eating.
Plant in deep fertile soil that drains well yet stays cool. Add organic mulch around the roots without covering the cane bases.
Water deeply when the top few centimetres dry. Even moisture from flowering to harvest helps fruit fill uniformly.
Tie 6–8 strong canes to wires at 80 and 150cm and keep new canes separate from fruiting ones.
In early spring add mature compost and a balanced fruit-plant feed according to its label. Avoid excess nitrogen.
Mulch the roots, remove weeds by hand and pick frequently. During prolonged heat, provide light afternoon shade.
Thin crowded new canes, water at the base and pick daily at peak ripeness to preserve aroma.
It is self-fertile. Good bee activity helps each fruit fill evenly and retain its conical shape.
The main harvest arrives during July on canes grown the previous year.
Pick when red fruit is strongly aromatic and slips from the core with minimal movement.
Secure netting to a separate frame as fruit begins to colour and leave easy access.
After planting: tie strong canes loosely and allow new ones to grow complete for the following summer.
Immediately after harvest, with a winter check of laterals
‘Summer Chef’ fruits on canes grown the previous year. After the final picking remove only fruited canes at the base and tie new green canes into their place.
Action: Train new green canes separately from fruiting ones.
Retain: Retain 6–8 strong new canes.
Action: Spread last year’s canes over the wires and remove only overlong laterals.
Retain: Retain short well-lit laterals with flowers and fruit.
Action: After picking cut brown fruited canes at the base.
Retain: Tie green new canes to the vacant wires.
Use sharp, clean tools suited to the diameter of the wood.
Renew ties and remove only broken or diseased wood.
Do not do this: Do not confuse new green canes with brown fruited ones; the green canes are next year’s harvest.
New green canes build next year’s framework beside the old ones.
Last year’s canes fill short laterals with large aromatic red fruit.
After harvest the old generation is removed and the new one spreads over the wires.
Mature ‘Summer Chef’ has strong year-old canes with many short aromatic fruiting laterals and a new generation at the crown.
Aroma peaks when fruit completes volatile-compound synthesis, shortly before rapid softening begins.
What to expect after planting: New green canes build next year’s framework beside the old ones.
‘Summer Chef’ was created through collaboration between Lubera and historic East Malling Research in Kent. Breeder Felicidad Fernández combined the station’s deep experience in summer raspberries with Lubera’s emphasis on cultivars delivering genuine flavour value in home gardens.
New lines were tested not only for size and crop, but through repeated tasting. One selection stood out for intense fruity aroma, floral and gently vanilla-like notes, large conical fruit and canes that remained healthy after winter.
The cultivar was released as ‘Summer Chef’, a name placing flavour and culinary use at the centre of its identity. Rather than offering merely plentiful fruit, it provides a summer raspberry profile worthy of fresh tasting and refined desserts.
Raspberry ketone, ionones, terpenes and esters create characteristic aroma. The overall impression depends on their ratios rather than one compound.
Summer cropping depends on live buds on wood that passed through winter. Vascular hardiness and proper cane maturation are critical.

It is self-fertile. Good bee activity helps each fruit fill evenly and retain its conical shape.
1.8–2.2m high and approximately 0.7–0.9m wide, with the habit described above.
Yes, in a container of at least 50 litres with two firm wires and room for both cane generations.
The main harvest arrives during July on canes grown the previous year.
When fruit is deep red, slips without pressure and smells clearly before tasting.
Immediately after harvest remove fruited canes; green new ones remain for next summer.
