Fragrant, evergreen and ready to dress railings, pergolas and walls 🤍
Family: Apocynaceae • Pot diameter: 15 cm • Height: 50–60 cm
The Rhynchospermum jasminoides, also known as star jasmine, is one of the most loved evergreen climbers for Mediterranean balconies and gardens. It forms dense, glossy green growth and produces white, star-shaped flowers with a rich fragrance, making it ideal for entrances, railings, pergolas and places where you want privacy together with seasonal bloom. Elegant, resilient and extremely useful in outdoor design, it combines coverage, fragrance and a green look throughout the year.
Place it in a bright position with sun or partial shade, ideally somewhere protected from very strong, dry winds. For richer flowering, choose a spot with several hours of light, while on very hot balconies a little afternoon shade helps keep the foliage fresher. In a container, it needs good drainage, steady watering until established and a support structure so the growth can be guided properly.
Taxonomic history: Star jasmine belongs to the family Apocynaceae. In modern botanical nomenclature it is widely listed as Trachelospermum jasminoides, while in trade and older horticultural use it is still very commonly seen as Rhynchospermum jasminoides. The common name “star jasmine” comes from the white, fragrant flowers, even though the plant does not belong to the genus Jasminum.
Native range & habitat: The species has an Asian origin, with a native range from parts of Japan through eastern and southeastern Asia to Vietnam. It grows as a woody climbing plant in bright places, woodland margins and sheltered positions. This natural habit explains its need for support, a bright position and well-drained substrate.
Naming & ornamental identity: The epithet jasminoides means “jasmine-like” and mainly describes the impression given by the fragrant white flowers. Its ornamental value is based on the combination of evergreen foliage, scented flowering and the ability to cover vertical surfaces in a natural, elegant way.
Spread & landscape use: Star jasmine became especially popular in mild and Mediterranean climates because it works both as a fragrant flowering climber and as a practical cover plant. It is used on pergolas, walls, fences and large containers, where it creates a stable green background with a strong seasonal flush of flowers.
