Small, but the flowering refuses to stay quiet 🌵
Family: Cactaceae • Pot diameter: 5.5cm
Rebutia albiareolata is a small, rounded cactus with prominent white areoles, fine spines and compact growth that suits small pots and bright positions beautifully. Its form is clean and distinctive: a low body, dense areole pattern and a natural tendency to become fuller over time. Despite its small size, it can become especially impressive when in bloom, as Rebutia cacti are known for rich, often brightly coloured flowers that appear around the body of the plant. It is ideal for bright shelves, windowsills, small pots and cactus compositions where a small-scale plant with clean form, low care demands and strong spring interest is needed.
Place it in a very bright position, ideally near a window with plenty of natural light or in a sheltered outdoor spot with gentle morning or afternoon sun. Rebutia albiareolata needs a fast-draining substrate and a small pot that dries properly between waterings. In low light, it may lose its compact form and flower less. Outdoors, transition to stronger sun should be gradual, especially after a period in a greenhouse or indoor environment.
Composition goal: a small dry-style planting with clean rounded form, pale texture and strong seasonal flowering.
Taxonomic history: Rebutia albiareolata belongs to the family Cactaceae and is commonly found in cultivation under the traditional name Rebutia. In modern taxonomic approaches, several plants in this group may also be encountered under the genus Aylostera, so the same plant may appear in collections with minor naming differences.
Place & natural group: Rebutias and related Aylostera are mainly associated with mountainous and sub-mountainous regions of South America, where small rounded cacti have adapted to strong light, fast drainage and dry periods.
Naming: The epithet albiareolata refers to the white areoles, the small white points from which the spines and, on flowering plants, the flower buds appear. It is a name that directly describes one of the most recognisable morphological features of the plant.
Species character: Rebutia albiareolata stands out for its small rounded growth, fine white areole texture and ability to flower richly when it receives enough light and a proper winter rhythm. It is a small-scale cactus, but with very strong seasonal presence.

| 🌺 Flowering | Rich flowering on mature, properly lit plants, often around the body of the cactus. |
| 🐾 Toxicity | Non-toxic, but the spines require care around children and pets. |
It needs a very bright position to stay compact and to have better flowering potential. It can receive gentle direct sun, with gradual adjustment.
Water only when the substrate has dried well. In winter, watering should be much less frequent, especially if the plant is kept in a cooler spot.
Rebutias generally flower quite readily when they have very bright light, proper substrate and a drier rest period. Flowering appears mainly on mature, well-grown plants.
Yes, as long as the basics are followed: very bright light, a small pot with good drainage and watering only when the substrate has dried well.
