Small, with flowers that refuse to stay discreet 🌵
Family: Cactaceae · Pot diameter: 5.5 cm
Rebutia albiareolata is a small cactus with a green globular body, crisp white areoles and fine spination creating a bright dotted pattern. Low ribs divide into small tubercles, adding rich texture without making the form feel heavy. As side heads appear, it builds a dense miniature with interest from every angle.
The calm white-and-green palette is transformed when orange to red flowers open around the base and sides. Their intensity is remarkable in relation to the small body, explaining the species’ appeal in Rebutia collections. It offers clean geometry, recognisable texture and a major seasonal surprise.
Three defining details that turn its botanical identity into real presence for a collection and interior.
A bright repeating pattern organises the surface and defines each tubercle.
Orange-red flower tubes emerge from older side areoles and surround the base.
Side heads multiply the white-green pattern and the potential flower display.
Why you’ll love it: it keeps a low finely detailed form all year, then overturns it seasonally with a crown of fiery flowers.
Place it in very bright light close to eye level, where the white areoles are easy to see. Dark terracotta or charcoal grit strengthens the pale pattern and warm flowers. Leave room around the base because flower tubes emerge low and need an unobstructed path.
Pair it with plants that genuinely share its light, substrate and seasonal rhythm. Separate pots keep care precise for each one.
Strong bright light with gentle sun and protection from extreme summer heat.
Water in growth after full drying; keep rest dry.
Cool nights, excellent airflow and a bright cold winter.
Fine spines irritate; keep the cluster out of reach.
Provide strong bright light and gentle direct sun. Protect it from scorching midday heat, as mountain Rebutia prefers cooler air.
During active growth, water deeply once the mix is fully dry. Allow free drainage and keep it dry through a bright cold winter.
The cluster needs air between heads and around the base. Remove spent flowers and avoid misting or water remaining in the areoles.
Cool nights and a cold rest support compact growth and flowering. Protect from frost, especially when the mix is wet.
Use a mineral fast-draining mix in a small pot with a clear drainage hole. Do not break up the cluster unnecessarily.
With fresh Sybasoil, wait about two months, then apply very diluted Cactus & Succulent Focus only during active growth. Stop feeding well before rest.
Rebutia albiareolata is widely used in cultivation. Depending on taxonomic source, it appears near Rebutia deminuta or as Aylostera albiareolata.
The form is associated with the Tarija region of Bolivia at around 2,600 m, on rocky grassy mountain slopes.
The epithet “albiareolata” refers to the conspicuously white areoles that organise the dotted body pattern.
From natural habitat to care: Bolivian mountain slopes combine intense light, cool nights, wind and water that drains rapidly among rocks and grasses. In a pot it needs the same four elements: bright but not overheated conditions, mineral mix, clear drying and a cold dry rest.
Wool and fine spines reflect light, making every tubercle appear as a separate dot.
Unlike many genera flowering at the crown, Rebutia often blooms low around the sides.
Each mature head can produce its own buds, creating a much richer overall display.
Moves between Rebutia and Aylostera reflect differing interpretations of morphological and molecular data.
Useful answers about light, watering, seasonal rhythm and the plant’s correct identity.
Both placements occur in modern and historical sources. The trade name is retained, with the taxonomic alternative explained in the origin section.
Usually from older areoles low on the sides, not only from the crown. Do not cover the base with deep grit.
During active growth, once the mix is fully dry. Water thoroughly and drain; keep it dry in the cold winter.
It may be immature or lack strong light and a bright cold rest. Continuous winter warmth often reduces bud formation.
Use mineral Sybasoil Cacti & Succulent in a small pot with a drainage hole. After about two months, apply very diluted Cactus & Succulent Focus only during growth.
Fine spines can enter skin or mouth. Keep the cluster out of reach and handle it by the pot.
