Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Breebay’ Bannow Bay® resembles a small palette that changes with the seasons. Wavy leaves combine olive green and cream, with pink tones becoming stronger as the weather cools. Fine dark twigs show between them and sharpen the bright variegation. Its naturally rounded crown gives this changing colour a calm outline. The result is an evergreen shrub with a clear shape and enough intricate detail to reward a position where it can be enjoyed close up.

Use it as a low evergreen sphere by an entrance, in a repeated rhythm along a path or as a pair of pots, allowing the natural crown to remain slightly organic.

Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Breebay’ Bannow Bay® originated with Annette and Pierce Breen in Ireland. The selection stood out for its rounded growth and wavy variegated leaves, which shift from olive green and cream towards stronger pink and purple tones.

Plantipp introduced it internationally as Bannow Bay®, with European protection EU 61715. In 2022 the cultivar received a KVBC silver medal at Plantarium/Groen-Direkt. The precise date of the original selection has not been made public.

Variegation within the blade

Cream areas of the leaf contain less chlorophyll than green tissue. A shoot carrying entirely green leaves has a greater proportion of chlorophyll-bearing tissue and may gradually outgrow variegated shoots. This is a change in the new shoot, rather than a simple seasonal colour change in the same leaf.
