Family: Pinaceae • Pot diameter: 13 cm • Height: ~15 cm
Compact, cushion-like form that keeps its shape with almost no effort 🧩
A dwarf selection of the mountain pine with a low, spreading habit that creates clean, architectural green mounds. Perfect for rock gardens and minimal container schemes — it gives year-round structure and asks for very little care.
Choose a sunny site with free drainage. Prefers poor–medium, well-drained media; plant slightly raised in heavy soils. Water to establish in year one, then infrequently. No pruning required; optional candle pinching in late spring maintains a very low profile.
Taxonomic base: Pinus mugo — alpine pine of the Alps and central/southeastern Europe, native to subalpine habitats with wind and poor soils.
Naming status: Cultivated form (‘pumilio’) with dwarf, spreading growth; widely established clonal material without specific IP protection.
Selection: Traditional European selection from dwarf forms of the species; chosen for compact habit, slow growth and toughness.
Foliage/cones: Dense, short needles in pairs; short spring “candles” and generally short internodes.
Habitat & culture: Exposed elevations with wind, poor–acidic substrates and harsh climate; in gardens, excellent drainage and full sun are key.
How it differs: Compared with typical mugo, ‘Pumilio’ is lower and wider, keeping a cushion form without frequent pruning.
Propagation: Cuttings/grafting to maintain traits; reliable landscape performance with proper drainage.
