Dense, low, tidy 🟢
Family: Pinaceae • Pot diameter: 17cm • Height: ~25cm
Pinus mugo 'Mughus' is the dwarf pine that brings a “mountain” feel on a small scale: low, dense, full, with dark green foliage that stays attractive all year round. It naturally builds a compact, rounded form and works as a stable element in the composition — ideal when you want permanent structure in a pot, entrance area, rock garden or small garden. With slow growth, it keeps its size “under control” for years and gives the clean, tidy result we usually expect from conifers, without constant intervention.
Outdoors, in a position with plenty of light, ideally sun. It needs soil that drains well and does not hold constant moisture. In a pot, make sure there are drainage holes and that water does not remain in the saucer. If the spot has strong, dry winds, a more protected position helps it keep a better appearance.
Composition goal: a low, dense green base that never looks empty.
Taxonomic history: Pinus mugo is a mountain pine of the family Pinaceae, known for its low, shrubby forms. In garden use, many “dwarf” selections are connected with natural populations that show compact growth at high elevations.
Place/habitat & distribution: Natural populations of mountain pine occur in mountain zones of Central and South-Eastern Europe, where conditions such as cold, wind and poor soils favour low, dense growth.
Naming/etymology & collection: The name 'Mughus' has historically been used in horticulture to describe compact, low-growing forms of mountain pine, selected for stable structure and outdoor resilience.
Selection/breeding & distribution: The variety became established through the selection of plants with a tighter crown and slow growth, so they could perform reliably in gardens and pots. To preserve the form and compact appearance faithfully, nursery production is carried out through vegetative methods.
| 🔎 Detail | Information |
|---|---|
| 🌿 Scientific name | Pinus mugo 'Mughus' |
| 🪴 Pot/Size | 17cm • height ~25cm |
| 🌲 Foliage | Evergreen • dark green • very dense crown |
| ☀️ Light | Sun, ideally, to partial shade. |
| 💧 Watering | Moderate • avoid constant moisture • drainage always required. |
| 📏 Growth rate | Slow • keeps a low, compact shape. |
| ☠️ Use note | Not edible. Needles/resin may irritate if chewed. |
It prefers sun, but also tolerates partial shade. In more light, it becomes denser and keeps a more attractive, symmetrical shape.
Water when the upper layer dries and always empty water from the saucer or decorative pot. In winter, water less frequently, always with good drainage.
It is not necessary. If you want a more “contained” look, in spring make a light adjustment to the new growth so the crown thickens, without heavy pruning.
Protect the pot during prolonged frost by insulating the sides or moving it to a more sheltered spot. Keep the soil slightly moist, not soaked.
