Light and position

Provide abundant bright indirect or filtered light. Gentle morning and weaker winter sun can support compact growth, but any increase in exposure must be gradual. Fierce summer midday sun can bleach or scorch the upper surface.

Correct watering

Check the mix below the surface and lift the pot. Once most of it has dried, soak evenly until water leaves the drainage hole and empty the saucer. Do not keep the roots continually wet, but avoid leaving the plant completely dehydrated for a prolonged period while it is producing new leaves.

Air movement and humidity

Normal household humidity is sufficient when air can circulate. Avoid a closed terrarium, misting that keeps the stems persistently wet and water trapped around the base. Higher humidity without ventilation slows drying and increases the risk of rot.

Temperature and seasonal rhythm

Keep it ideally above 15°C and do not expose it below 10°C. It has no documented obligatory indoor dormancy; it simply uses less water as light or temperature falls and speeds up again when clear new growth appears.

Substrate and pot

Use a very airy, fast-draining cactus and succulent mix with porous mineral components, in a pot with a drainage hole. Choose a size only slightly larger than the root system; unnecessary substrate volume stays wet longer than its fine roots require.

Feeding, repotting and handling

If repotted into the recommended fresh mix, wait for its incorporated nutrition —about 180 days— to be used before adding feed. Afterwards, and only while new leaves are forming, use liquid cactus and succulent nutrition at 5 ml/L with every second normal watering, never as an extra watering. Hold the plant near the base because its fleshy stems break easily.

The accepted name is Peperomia graveolens Rauh & Barthlott in the family Piperaceae. This is a natural species, not a cultivar; ‘Ruby Glow’ is a common trade name describing its red colour rather than a registered cultivar name.

A 1973 collection became a new species

Werner Rauh and Wilhelm Barthlott collected the plant near Oña in southern Ecuador on 12 September 1973 under collection number 35122. The reference material was deposited at the HEID herbarium, and the same botanists formally published the new species in 1975.

From southern Ecuador’s highlands

Known records come from southern Ecuador’s inter-Andean regions around Oña and Loja. National botanical documentation places it as a terrestrial succulent in dry inter-Andean vegetation at roughly 2,000–2,500 m elevation.
